January 24, 2008 | Contests
Don’t forget that you have until tomorrow night to enter to win a free Senseo system just because you’re pretty.
The winner will be announced Monday, which is also when I’ll be announcing the next contest. Never fear, there’s always something else to win ’round here!

Hey, there’s another special going on at Second Spin, my new favorite place to buy CDs. Today only (January 24th, 2008), you can use coupon code 25JAN18 to take 25% off your total CD and DVD order.
And if I’d been paying attention, I would’ve posted it earlier. But despite the saved money, I’ve been paying dearly for my last purchase there, so it may have slipped my mind. (Don’t believe me? Allow me to paint the scene: My 9-year-old, and a pile of karaoke CDs. Now you understand.)

Got a girl with an upcoming birthday bash?
While I suppose you can’t go wrong with the traditional Bag O’ Cheap Trinkets for a goody bag, I vastly prefer to give the kids one item which I think they’ll really enjoy. I think the parents are grateful for this, too. So I’m always on the lookout for items on the cheap which I can use for this purpose.
Here’s some Klutz books not only marked down at Amazon, but part of the 4-for-3 promotion, making them even cheaper when you buy them in multiples of 4! You can buy one cheaper than filling a bag, and it’s a cool activity instead of plastic whistles and such.
Pocket Paper Dolls, Princess for $3.22 (54% off)
Pocket Paper Dolls, Fairy for $3.22 (54% off) (be careful with this one, as it claims to be a pre-order for 2010… probably an error, but just be aware)
Wishing Stars for $2.76 (54% off)
Button Ringsfor $2.76 (54% off)

There’s all manner of sales and bargains at BabyCenter
going on right now, so whether you have your own baby or need a gift for someone, it’s worth taking a look.
Use one of the available coupons, too:
FREESHIP49 — free shipping on $49+ (no expiration)
SAVE15% — 5% off $25+, 10% off $50+, 15% off $150+ (expires January 28th, 2008)
(Coupons don’t stack, I don’t think, so pick one.)
They also sent me this (unintentionally) amusing email about how most births happen in the summer to fall, which means that shopping for maternity clothes happens around now, which clearly they were mentioning because they sell maternity clothes. And really, I am such a child—all I could think was that a lot of people had themselves a merry little Christmas.

LL Bean’s Thursday Morning Markdown today is this sling backpack, available in six different colors and 72% off at just $8.
This is not a pack for little kids—their recommendation is 15+. But it’s a great pack for a teen or, heck, even for you.
(The season of free shipping codes seems to have ended, but remember you get free shipping all the time if you have a Bean Visa. Shipping and handling is only $3.95, though, so don’t skip the deal on account of that.)

Looking for some cheap DVDs? There’s a whole bunch of ‘em on sale for $4.99 at Best Buy this week.
Looks like shipping is $1.99 apiece for DVDs, or you can ship to your local store and pick up.
(Or you can just use Netflix and rent it and send it back, but maybe you have a burning need to own Wayne’s World. I don’t judge.)

There’s all sorts of sales happening at Target online, this week, and maybe if I was more organized I would’ve put this stuff up on Sunday. But I’m not, so I didn’t. Whoops. Anyway, here it is:
Spend $125+ on furniture, save 15% and get free shipping.
Spend $50+ in Women’s, get free shipping.
Spend $50+ in Bedding, get free shipping.
Spend $50+ in Home, get free shipping.
And—I know, this one is a shock—spend $50+ in Shoes, get free shipping.
Actually, there’s a ton of stuff where if you spend $50 in one department, you get free shipping. I could be wrong, but I’m thinking they’re trying to get you to spend $50. Just a hunch I have. Don’t use this as an excuse to buy more, of course, but if it’s a purchase you would’ve made anyway and it saves you from driving to the store? Score.

Far and away the most common question I am emailed in association with this site is “How can I save money on groceries?” Most of us are feeding families, and most of us are dismayed by the rising costs of food.
Most of us would like to know how to feed our families on a shoestring budget, and I was the same way, for years. For some of us, it’s absolute necessity to bring the bill down. For others, we just have this notion that this is another place where we must save as much money as possible.
There are two things to remember when headed into this issue: First, that there are ways to keep the bill down; but second, that you probably should be spending more on food than you think. (more…)

It’s Wednesday, and that means the JC Penney Wednesday deals are up.
I don’t know about you, but I’ve totally been scouring the ends of the earth looking for a ficus that doubles as an air purifier….
… what?
Okay, maybe I was kidding about that one. But I do sort of love this train cupcake mold. (And I think someone sent this link to me a while back, too.)

Senseo wants to hook you in to their single-cup-at-a-time way of life so badly, they’re willing to give you a nearly-free system to do it. Here’s what you do: Go on over to this survey and after filling it out, you may be emailed a chance to purchase a Senseo system for just $15 in shipping. (For reference: I believe the machine you receive is this one). Be patient—the email may take up to a week to arrive. If you get the email, you can then place an order.
The Senseo gets good reviews as a machine, but of course for us tightwads the main concern is that the “pods” it uses are, ounce for ounce, much more expensive than regular coffee. Plus, they’re not really the same as grinding your own beans, if you’re doing that. Should these concerns be on your mind, I’ll mention three options:
1) I seem to see the pods on clearance at Target quite often,
2) Reusable Eco Pads!,
and
3) This tutorial is both informative and hilarious.
Furthermore, my fellow frugals, I know that for some of us, even $15 seems like too much to spend. I feel you. In fact, I think we should come up with a better price. Hmmmm… let me think. Let’s see. How does free sound, instead?
One lucky Want Not reader will receive the Senseo system absolutely free because that’s how I roll, baby. To have a shot at winning, simply leave a comment on this post before 11:59 p.m. on Friday, January 25th. One comment per person, please. Winner to be determined by random drawing, so sucking up will not help you. But don’t let that stop you. Heh.
And… go!
