Archive for April, 2008

I don’t want to alarm you, but do you realize how soon Mother’s Day is coming up? May 11th, people. There’s no time to lose!
(And, you know, no pressure or anything, but that’s also my anniversary. Just sayin’.)
Today (April 23rd, 2008) you can get free shipping on any size order at Eddie Bauer by using coupon code APRILSHIP. (Thanks, Jamie!) There’s plenty of stock in the clearance section, too, and it’s not like she’s going to care what you paid. I mean… unless she’s a Want Not reader, in which case she’ll open the box and say “I sure hope you got this on clearance with free shipping!”

Need clothes for the kiddos? Run over to Children’s Place; they’ve just dropped the prices in the Outlet to 50% off.
Sizes and selection are limited, but if you shop quickly, you may yet find a few things for your little darlings. (I have an empty box sitting here from our last order, which came a couple of days ago.) Coupon code S1A48 is still working for 15% off your order, too. Run!

Pretty, pretty Steph writes:
Pretty Pretty Mir, I have a question for you. I am going to Hawaii in June of this year, and April of next year, and the Samsonite luggage I got when I graduated from high school 10 years ago is falling apart. My family does alot of traveling (the trip this June is to get my sister and I to the state of Hawaii, we’ve been to all the other 49 states, the trip next April is a high school band trip), but does it in short time frames. We rarely stay in one place more than two nights, when we are gone for 1 1/2 to 2 weeks each summer. So…I need luggage that can take a beating, then get put in the closet til the next time. II don’t want to spend a LOT of money, but I would like something with a liftime/long guarantee. Any suggestions?
Actually, Steph wrote me this email a couple of weeks ago and I’ve been mulling it over for a while, because I’m of two minds on this issue. Usually I have a strong opinion and no issues with sharing it. For this… well, I’m just not sure. (more…)

Okay, so, the last time I posted a Spring Hill Nursery deal, a few of you left comments saying that their plants are awful and you’ve had bad luck with them. I encourage (respectful) freedom of speech here, so that’s fine and I thank you all for sharing. However, I’ve ordered from them multiple times over the years and have never had a problem. Not once. And this year I bought myself some strawberry kits and holy guacamole are they growing like gangbusters. All of my squirrels should be enjoying fresh berries within a month.
Anyway, in honor of Earth Day, Spring Hill has marked a bunch of stuff up to 50% off. And there’s also an available $25 off any $50+ order coupon which you can activate by going through that there link. The only catch is that you just have to browse around to find the sale items, but I promise they’re lurking in the sale section for today only.
And who doesn’t like beautiful plants? Cave dwellers, that’s who. It’s nearly May so come out of the cave, people!

Some of you have done this deal in the past, but for those of you who haven’t, here’s the deal: Every year Allure Magazine puts together a box of beauty goodies—usually heavily geared towards sun protection, so there will be some regular make-up but also lots of sunblock items and fancy moisturizers.
The box is then released on a predetermined day/time, and the supply is limited. It’s a first come, first served kind of thing. This year’s box is a $255 value and can be ordered for $29.99 plus shipping. You will be able to find it through this link starting at 12:01 p.m. eastern time today (April 22nd, 2008) NOW (it’s currently 10:40 a.m. and people have been able to order already).
I’ve gotten the box a couple of times and have always been pleased with it. Generally if you like and use even a couple of items, it pays for itself and the rest is gravy. These will sell out extremely quickly so be poised to hit the site and order as close to noon as possible if you want one.
Go below the fold to see what items will be included in this year’s box; just keep in mind that some of these items will be full-size and some will be sample-size. (more…)

1 Sale A Day is featuring a twin-size Aerobed today for $29.99 with $5.99 shipping. It includes a pump and a storage bag. (For comparison: Here it is on Amazon for over twice that price.)
I think it’s handy to have one of these for when your kid has a guest or when you go camping. I also think it’s handy to have one of these so that when your kid misbehaves you can pick up the (small) bag and say, “If you don’t knock it off, you’re gonna be sleeping in here tonight!”
Then again, some of my parenting fantasies are more controversial than others….

The spring fashion clearance is on at Macy’s, and through April 23rd, 2008, ship your clearance clothing and accessories for just $.99 with coupon code 99CENTS. Look for the items which say “This item qualifies towards 99 cent shipping!” because it would be far too logical if all of the clearance qualified, now wouldn’t it?
Do not ask me to explain why some things qualify and others don’t. Nonetheless, I spy with my Macy’s-loving little eye some great deals….

Did you order from Lands’ End lately, and now you see something else you wish you’d nabbed? Don’t fret! Keep an eye on your email; they’re sending out unique (individual, one-time-use) free shipping codes to folks who shopped with them recently.
It’s the perfect chance to get just one more thing!

Despite my deep love of things like chocolate and bacon and a really awesome pair of shoes, those of you who know me well know I have one love which surpasses all others. And despite the fact that this particular affection is something good for you, it still remains my number 1 vice; the thing I’m most likely to turn to for relaxation or entertainment or when I really should be working.
No, not that. Sheesh.
I’m referring, of course, to reading a good book. If the story is a bit magical… well, so much the better.
If you’re a girl at heart or have a female bibliophile in your life between the ages of 5-9, listen up: The Fairy Chronicles are a series from Sourcebooks about regular girls who also just happen to be fairies, and their associated adventures. The stories are darling and—perhaps best of all—they don’t involve subject matter best left to an older age group (something that is, sadly, becoming harder and harder to find for our young girls). These books are ideal for reading together or for her to read under the covers with a flashlight.
So far, there are seven different books in the Fairy Chronicles series. Each book retails for $6.99. I have a set of those seven books to give away to one lucky Want Not reader! The retail value is close to $49, but can you really put a value on nurturing a child’s love of reading? No, you cannot.
For a chance to win the book set, leave a comment on this post before 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008. One comment per person, please! Winner to be determined by random drawing and (what else?) pixie dust. Obviously.
Good luck!
