Hey hey hey, it’s Wednesday! (That rhymes, but isn’t as much fun to say as, “Hey hey hey, it’s Faaaaaat Albert!”) (Note to self: slow down on the coffee.)
Don’t forget the JC Penney Wednesday Deals. They have some nice ties in there, available in extra-long, too, if you happen to have an extra-long guy (I do, and finding ties for him is positively annoying).

Sorry not to get this one up sooner, but, well, I just found it. Heh.
Until midnight tonight (Tuesday, August 26th, 2008), get free shipping at Lands’ End using coupon code ONEDAY and PIN 00008268. As always, check the Overstocks for the best deals.
I was looking at rain boots for the kids (it’s pouring here today!), but there’s actually a decent selection of snowboots in the Overstocks, if you live somewhere you’ll need ‘em and feel like shopping ahead.

Did you happen to notice that Threadless is having a back-to-school sale? All shirts normally $15 - $22 are just $12 each. The new(ish) Threadless prints are just $25 each, too, if those are more your speed.
I don’t know that anyone is ever going to accuse me (or my kids) of being too cool for school, but we do love Threadless Ts. Heh.

I got to thinking the other day when I posted about IRA contributions, and I realized we’ve never really hashed out the whole matter of paying down debt vs. saving for retirement, here.
And lord knows that many, many people—who are actually, you know, financial experts and not just incurable tightwards such as myself—have discussed this in greater detail, but I’m going to take a stab at the Want Not summary of this issue. Just for fun. And because, if nothing else, I hope it will motivate anyone who has questions or concerns in this area to do the research and commit to a plan.
So I’m going to give you a few general tips and hopefully somewhere in there we’ll hit upon something good. Heh. (more…)

There are some stores I adore, though the regular prices cause me to fan myself like a fancy lady in an old movie. Ahem. Nonetheless, when I saw that select items at CompanyKids are shipping for free, I had to check it out—just in case something wasn’t too expensive.
Well… it’s still kind of expensive. But they have a wide assortment of Little Missmatched items, which I have never seen on sale anywhere, and are unbearably cute and maybe a nice little splurge for the holidays, or something. Coupon code KIDSTUFF will give you another 20% off one item, too.
I feel like such an enabler. I’m standing on the corner in a trenchcoat, polka-dotted socks tucked inside, whispering to passersby, “Pssssst! Wanna buy something cute?” I’m ashamed. Truly. Well, a little bit, anyway.

There’s a new coupon code out for Restaurant.com—try to contain your shock and wonder. Through the end of the month, you can use coupon code LABOR to take 60% off dining certificates, which means you’ll get $25 worth of dining for just $4 out of pocket.
And don’t forget—restaurants get added all the time, so if you’ve never been able to find a participant in your area, keep checking back. Maybe today’s the day your favorite is in there!

If you’ve been wanting new, good-quality silverware, you might want to check out this Oneida “Flight” service for 8 for $40.14.
In case you’re wondering? The service for 4 set is $44.73.
Yeah. Don’t try to make sense of it. Can’t be done.

(Certificate of Deposit, that is. Not music.)
If you’ve been thinking about buying a CD (I have) but are dismayed by the current interest rates (I am), you might be interested to know that WaMu is currently offering 5% on 12-month CDs.
I totally think banks should offer pricematching. “Hey, ING? Yeah, I found a better rate elsewhere. But I’d love to leave my money with you. Can you match it? You can? Thanks so much! You’re pretty!”

Hello, my pretties! We’re going to do something a little bit different for this week’s contest.
First, I’d like you to go take a look at the most gorgeous coffee-table book I’ve ever seen—it’s called America at Home and it’s a monster of a tome. This was a collaborative project put together by photographer Rick Smolan (a renowned photographer), and the end result is a stunning collection of day-in-the-life photos from all around the country. It was created during a seven day-period last September by not only 100 professional photographers but by tens of thousands of amateurs as well.
The book itself is beautiful and impressive, but they’re doing something really cool in addition to just producing the book. They’re also selling them with custom covers, which means that you can go online and upload your favorite photo to turn it into the book jacket! Personally, I think this is all kinds of brilliant.
This book sells for $39.95 + shipping and handling, but three lucky Want Not readers are going to win copies of “America at Home” and get to make their own custom covers to go with ‘em.
Here’s what’s different: This contest will not be determined by random drawing. I will be hand-selecting three winners based on your cover photos. Here’s what you do:
1) Go use their custom cover creator to make yourself a cover, featuring your favorite photo.
2) When you get to the final (billing) step, instead of purchasing, click on the “Email my cover to a friend” button and send it to yourself. You will get an email with a link to your cover.
3) Come back to this post and leave the link to your cover in the comments. That constitutes your contest entry.
(Here’s an example of a cover I made and mailed to myself just to give you an idea.)
One entry per person, valid email address required. I will take entries until 3:00 p.m. Eastern (noon Pacific) on Sunday, August 31st, 2008. (That’s a whole week, so plenty of time.) Winners to be determined based on the ones that tickle my fancy. So, um, get to ticklin’.

Don’t let my husband the professional photographer see this post, but when most of the world looks for a “decent” small camera, we’re not talking about something in the $500 range. (Go figure.) For most of us, something in the $100 - $200 range will get us something suitable to carry in a purse or throw in a beach bag and take pretty good pictures.
Granted, I’m a layperson (read: average human) when it comes to these things, but if you do a little research you’ll find that the Canon Elphs are generally well-reviewed and pretty powerful little cameras for the money. I have an Elph, myself, and I love it. Even if my husband does occasionally mock it.
Today Amazon has the Canon PowerShot SD1100IS camera marked down to $179.95 with free shipping, which is the cheapest I’ve seen it. Read the specs, but this is one of their top Elphs, with image stabilization and all sorts of fancy things. Really a nice little model.
Use “Bill Me Later” and you can apply coupon code BMLDEALS to take another $20 off, too! (Remember—if you don’t really want to use BML, simply first purchase $159.95 worth of gift certificates, then go back in to buy the camera using BML, and you’ll be able to use the discount but pay with your certs. Awesome.)
This isn’t the sort of thing you’ll pick up on a whim (I hope!), but if you were looking for a decent camera, this should definitely be a contender. Four and a half stars after 188 reviews seems like a good bet, no?
