Good news, bad news

The good news is that Fashion Bug was having a One Day Appreciation Sale.

The bad news is that it was yesterday, and I forgot to tell you. Um. Oops!

The good news is that they extended it another day, so you can still shop the sale all day today (August 25th, 2008). Hooray! It’s an automatic 40% off regular prices and an additional 20% off already-reduced sale prices.

The bad news is that I’m still sort of a doofus for forgetting to post it.

The good news is that you forgive me because there are also coupons. Hooray! Use coupon code 776230807 for free shipping on $50+, or 776224107 for another 10% off any size order.

It’s not too early to start holiday shopping

I know there are those of you out there who want to smack me for suggesting you start your holiday shopping in August. But I also know that there are those of you who finished long before August even arrived, so hopefully it all evens out.

Anyway, right now Toys ‘R’ Us has hundreds of items with free shippingicon, including the fabulously cool Playmobil Christmas items which typically sell out pretty early in the season. Each of these is just $16.99 with free shipping:
Christmas in the Forest Advent calendar
Playmobil Nativity set
Playmobil Advent calendar (okay, this one is actually $17.99, and I’m not sure how it differs from the other one, but there you are)

We have that nativity set, by the way. It has about a gajillion pieces, and my kids still play with it every year. Although I do occasionally find a random Lego guy hanging out in the manger.

Have you contributed to your IRA today?

Oh, I know we’ve talked about retirement before—although I think I owe you a more detailed post on retirement accounts—but I was moving some money into my IRA this morning and thought to myself, “Self, you should mention this on Want Not.”

So here you go; a Sunday-morning “Do you know where your money is?” post.

Go read this, and go plug some numbers into this. I know we have a lot of stay-at-home parents reading here, and it is particularly important that all of you have retirement accounts, even though you are the population least likely to be planning for retirement.

Bottom line: If you have any money to spare, you should be putting it into a retirement account. If you don’t have any money to spare, find some. The longer you wait to invest, the less you’ll have when you need it. I challenge each and every one of you to deposit something to a retirement account this week—and then leave me a comment when you do, so that I can tell you how smart and pretty you are.

Saturday deals

First and foremost: Mea culpa! Everyone who scolded me yesterday that the Old Navy denim sale would not be in-store only? You were right. You can also shop it online. Today only (August 23rd, 2008), adult denim is $12 and kids’ denim is just $7. Limit 3 pairs per purchase.

This one sort of cracks me up: There’s currently a coupon available for Circuit City through this link here which will give you 10% off a purchase of $249+. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the list of exclusions is a mile long, and it starts with televisions. Hmph. Let me know if you manage to use it.

It’s another awesome offer from Origins.com; get free shipping and pick a free skin care set with every order.

Finally, a decent Overstock weekender coupon: Take 7.5% off any order (excluding media) through that there link, all weekend long. Wooooo!

The big home sale at Macy’s is running through Sunday, and if you spend $125+, you’ll get free shipping automatically.

Looking for a special outfit? Take a look over at Coldwater Creek, and then use coupon code WXH3964 through Sunday, August 24th, to take $25 off your $100 purchase. (Keep it affordable by shopping their outlet, even with the coupon.)

Have a fabulous day, everyone!

Hey there, Friday

Another week is nearly over, and that means it’s time for me to ponder the Amazon Friday Sale and feel guilty about the brownies I ate last night. (No, they’re not related. I just like to do both of these things on Friday.)

I love that this Speedo parka is in the Friday Sale today. Does that come with Michael Phelps? Please?

Looking for some little red shoes? I’m loving these peep-toes. Rowr!

How about $100 off on a Dyson DC17? That still makes it about $300 out of my price range, but maybe you love your asthmatic kids more than I love mine.

The Braun Multimix is back. Love this thing. Especially for folks in tight quarters (or on tight budgets) who can’t have a mixer and a food processor.

Support the fight against breast cancer by straightening your hair. Or something. (Nice price on a CHI, even if the whole pink thing irks me a little.)

This week’s sale isn’t really knocking my socks off. Let me know if you see something great I’m overlooking.

Don’t forget the Friday Five; this week features one of my favorites (Weezer, I’m looking at you).

Also, a little heads-up for you: Several of you have mailed me to mention that Old Navy is running an in-store denim special tomorrow (Saturday, August 23rd) $7 for kids’ jeans, $12 for adults’. Not available online, unfortunately.

TGIF!

More sale craziness at Crazy 8

Crazy 8 may have become my new favorite kids’ store, last year. I’ve picked up a ton of great stuff for the kids on the cheap.

Right now there’s a ton of stuff on sale, and it looks like you can use coupon code FREE10 to take $10 off your $30+ order. Shipping is always a flat $5, so it’s like free shipping and $5 off.

Heads up, carnivores

(I had lunch with my vegan friend today. Now I’m posting this a little bit because it’s a deal and a lot because I’m a brat.)

Through August 31st, 2008, the half-price clearance sale is on at Omaha Steaks.

Now, you know that a thrift-hound such as myself is never going to pay the regular prices there, but we’ve gotten stuff from Omaha Steaks a couple of times on deals and have always been pleased. Plus, the kids like to “do science experiments” with the dry ice it comes packed in. So, you know, consider it the price for a big meal and the evening’s entertainment.

Don’t forget the Thursday Morning Markdown

LL Bean’s Thursday offering today is a women’s silk/cotton v-neck sweater. Regularly $39.50, today it’s $15 apiece for one day only.

Plenty of sizes and colors from which to choose, too.

Make it even better—use coupon code 3004365 to ship it for free!

(Did anyone else get their kids’ comfort mountain mocs from last week’s markdown? Ours came yesterday and ohmygosh are they lightweight, and cute, too. Those was a total steal.)

I was trying to be strong, but I’m slipping

I saw this deal a few days ago and have been trying really really hard to refrain from posting it, but I just don’t think I’m strong enough. I mean, yes, I want to promote all manner of healthy things and be virtuous and everything. Sure.

On the other hand, man: Kettle Chips!

Did you know there’s a buffalo bleu flavor? I have been bested by a gourmet potato chip. I mean, who could resist that? I’m only human!

So here’s the deal: Many varieties of Kettle Chips are already marked down at Amazon, and the ones linked right there are also eligible for the grocery clearance, which means applying coupon code AUGMKDWN takes another 40% off. True, you won’t want to do this one unless you’re prepared to eat a lot of chips (or have teenagers, or an upcoming party), but the final savings are phenomenal.

Plus, the chips are really good.

Winner of the Oral-B Pulsonic contest

My my my my. So many of you value oral hygiene! It’s so heart-warming! And, um, tooth-brightening!

471 of you cast your names into the hat for the fancy new Oral-B Pulsonic, and sadly I only have one to give away. Maybe you could all share it!

(Ewwwwwwww.)

Anyway, the random number generator has spoken, er, generated, and it generated number 208, Aimee! Congratulations, Aimee, and please check your email!

Thanks to all who played, and a very special thanks to my pals at MS&L for donating the prize. And to Oral-B, too, for being so gosh-darned supersonic. Er, Pulsonic. Whatever.

Didn’t win this time? There’s always another contest just a day or two away, so don’t despair. More goodies will be headed out to lucky winners, and you never know when your number will hit the jackpot. (Yes, come to Want Not for the bargains, stay for the lottery—maybe that could be my new tag line.)
