Fun family viewing, just add popcorn

My children like old movies, which is kind of cool, because I get to re-watch some films I love when I was their age. But it’s also kind of frustrating, because back when I was a kid, the PG-13 rating didn’t exist, which means that a PG movie from back then may well be something that would garner a PG-13 rating, today, and I have to try to figure out what’s appropriate.

Enter the Dove Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping families find entertainment suitable for the entire family. They do this a lot of different ways (see their website for more info), but one of the things they’re doing is releasing double-feature DVDs of “Dove Approved” family movies. And I have a bunch of them to give away!

Today’s contest gives you the choice between an animated collection or a live-action collection. The animated collection includes All Dogs Go To Heaven/All Dogs Go To Heaven 2, Thumbelina/Once Upon a Forest, and Robots/Little Robots: Reach for the Sky. The live-action collection includes Aquamarine/Material Girls, The Sandlot/Rookie of the Year, and Agent Cody Banks/Catch That Kid. Two different prize packs, each containing 3 DVDs for a total of 6 great family-friendly movies.

Want to win? First go read the contest rules and regulations and then come back here and leave me a comment on this post by 11:59 p.m. Eastern (8:59 p.m. Pacific) on Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 telling me which pack you want to win in order to be entered. I’ll use my trusty random number generator to select two winners, as always. Make sure you pick one of the two packs, because if you don’t, your entry will be invalid. (I generate two numbers. The first number wins their pick. The second number wins their pick as long as the first number didn’t already win it. If that one is already gone, though, I pick another number.) (Pick, pack, pick, pack, ACK.)

Clear as mud? Yes? Go!

My name is Mir, and I love flowers

I know that fresh-cut flowers are kind of a waste of money, and I know it’s more environmentally friendly to, you know, let them continue growing in the ground instead of sitting in a vase on my table, but I can’t help it: I love flowers. I love having fresh flowers in the house. There, I said it.

Apparently I enjoy being a girl.

Anyway, I’m willing to eschew flowers for most of the year, you know, for the aforementioned reasons. But for Mother’s Day, I’m willing to kill a few flowers. Ahem. So I keep an eye on the FTD Mother’s Day specials, and maybe point them out to my husband, or maybe mention to no one in particular that they’re doing the buy a dozen roses, get another dozen free promotion again, oh hey, look at that. So interesting.

And then I bat my eyelashes a little.

I’m very subtle.

Hey, I have a couple of contest winners, here! Those of you who read and play on the weekends, you’re the prettiest. You’re my favorites. No, really.

Kiss My Face coupon working again

Several of you emailed to let me know that the posted coupon for 30% off at Kiss My Face wasn’t working. Thanks to the marketing folks at KMF, I was able to report the problem and just heard back that the coupon should now be working—use KMFBLOG3 for 30% off.

Sorry for the confusion! And thanks to KMF for straightening it out for us!

It must be the end of the month

Yes indeed, I know it’s almost May. How do I know? Well, it’s hot and humid out. The flowers are blooming. And Restaurant.com has gone ahead and busted out an 80% off code.

It’s like clockwork!

Anyway, if you want $25 worth of dining for just $2 out of pocket, surf on over there and use coupon code LUCKY to grab a certificate or three. With the money you save, you can hire a sitter. Or have dessert and a glass of wine. Or both, if you eat fast and go to a cheap restaurant. Just thinking out loud, here.

Start your week squeak-free

All I know about windshield wipers would fit tidily inside a thimble; as in, I know of two kinds—the kind that squeak, and the kind that don’t. Nonetheless, my husband (the car guy) assures me that today’s Amazon Gold Box deal of buy 1, get 1 free on all Valleo 900-series wiper blades is an awesome deal.

All I can tell you is that 1) they’re cheap and 2) they probably don’t squeak. You’re welcome!

Do it for the earth; do it for Mom

I have a cool contest with two possible prizes for you on this lovely Saturday.

First, Kroger wants you to enter their Design a Reusable Shopping Bag Contest—you win a free bag just for entering, and stand to win as much as $1,000 if you take the grand prize. Now I know that you’re all already using reusable shopping bags, right? Of course you are. But who can’t use another bag?

Second, Photofiddle wants to remind you that they’re the perfect destination for Mother’s Day gifts, because what mom doesn’t want a cool photo canvas?

Now. For this contest, first go read the contest rules and regulations. Then come back here and leave me a comment by 11:59 p.m. Eastern (8:59 p.m. Pacific) on Sunday, April 26th, 2009, telling me if you’d rather receive a $50 gift card to the Kroger family of stores, or a $50 gift code to be redeemed at Photofiddle. Two winners will be chosen via random number generation to receive the $50 gift of their choice.

You must select which prize you want to receive or I will eliminate your entry from consideration, because I’m mean like that.

Ready? Go!

Saturday deals

Gooooooooood morning! Ready to hit the bargains? I know I am! Let’s see what goodies we have for today….

Did you love the recent Kiss My Face contest? Their VP of marketing was kind enough to stop by and leave a discount code for us—just use KMFBLOG3 for 30% off your KMF order! (Thanks again, Louis!)

Today (Saturday, April 25th, 2009) only, get Mom what she really wants for Mother’s Day—shoes! Shop Shoebuy.com and use coupon code MOM for 20% off your order, plus shipping and returns are always free. Not that any of us need an excuse to buy pretty shoes, but there you go.

It was 90 degrees here yesterday (yes, really), and naturally my thoughts have turned to… patio furniture. This weekend, get 10% off all patio furniture at Overstock, plus shipping will be just $1. That’s a hard bargain to beat.

It’s a belated Earth Day celebration at Macy’s! Today only, spend $5 on a Good Turn ticket and get 10% or 20% off your entire purchase! Good Turn supports America’s national parks, and really, if you’re planning to buy something that costs more than $25, you earn that money back and then some.

Did you finally run out of Restaurant.com certificates? Shop through the weekend and save 60% with coupon code BONUS, plus receive a $15 Dale and Thomas certificate with every order! So that’s $4 out of pocket for $25 of dining and $15 of popcorn. Not bad.

Did you know that National Geographic sells beautiful jewelry from around the world? They do! Through the weekend you can use coupon code 09FSMOM to ship your $75+ jewelry purchase for free.

Today’s Amazon Gold Box deal is your choice of two different Leatherman tool combinations; get a Leatherman and a mini-flashlight or a Leatherman and a separate knife, either combo is just $39.99. Case included, too. Those make great Father’s Day or graduation gifts.

I’m off to water my plants and otherwise futz around, but I’ll be back with a contest later today, so stay tuned!

Holey Friday!

I’m taking my needlephobic-yet-dying-to-get-earrings tween to get her ears pierced, this afternoon. Please pray for me. By way of preparation, I’ve decided to spend the entire day in complete silence. You know, to calm my nerves before the screaming begins.

Fortunately, I can type very quietly, which means we can still explore the Amazon Friday Sale here in my cone of silence. Hooray!

Does Dad want a drill this Father’s Day? This Bosch 14.4V model looks like a great deal to me at under $100. (Where’s our resident tool expert to weigh in? BB, you out there?)

Need an airbed? Get this Eddie Bauer queen version for half its current price at Target. (It even has a built-in pump, which is key. G’head—ask me how I know that. I’m sure I couldn’t possibly be stupid enough to have bought a pumpless version and then taken it camping like a moron. Ahem.)

I’m sure you need to have the same brand of knives for this santoku box to actually fit them, but $4 for a Wolgang Puck cutting board/box seems like a crazy good deal, to me. At that price I might be tempted to just try it out.

Who needs silverware? (I love spoons that are all oval-y and swoopy like that. They’re the best kind for ice cream.) (Yes, oval-y and swoopy is the technical term. I’m an ice cream spoon scientist.)

There’s lots of cookware deals this week. If you want traditional (not non-stick) Calphalon, I recommend this set ($155; 68% off); if you want stainless, go for this non-stick Cuisinart set ($140; 75% off) or this traditional Cuisinart set ($110; 66% off); and if you want non-stick anodized, go for this Anolon set ($180; 78% off). And then invite me to dinner!

This hot chocolate frother seems like kind of a silly item, to me, but it’s eligible for the 4-for-3 promotion and could potentially help you knock out a bunch of those “what-do-I-get-them-for-the-holidays” kinds of gifts.

Hooray, the cheap towel sets are back! As low as $21 for a set of 6 in the white, with other colors costing a bit more. (I love white towels, anyway. No worries about the color fading!)

Don’t forget to check out the Friday Five, five MP3 albums for just $5 apiece, today only! On the righthand side of that page there’s also a link to a free gigantic music sampler, if free is more your speed.

Have a great Friday, everyone!

On the Nintendo DS Lite vs. DSi

I’ve had quite a few of you write in to ask me where to find a great deal on a Nintendo DS Lite now that Nintendo has finally debuted the much-touted DSi. And I mailed each of you back to say, “Oh, the prices are going to drop, I just know it! Post coming soon!” And then I never did write that post.

Because the prices still haven’t dropped. Ummm. Hello? Nintendo? $130 is still kind of steep for a toy my kid may well drop in the toilet. I’m just sayin’.

So I went hunting around, and I came across this excellent explanation of why the DS Lite prices aren’t likely to take a universal dip any time soon. Which means that we’re looking at going all the way until next holiday season before we see any great deals, most likely.

And that kind of stinks. I’ll keep an eye out, though, and let you know if anything changes.
