How to be cool for school

School’s a-comin’, and thankfully today at 6pm.com, all Converse sneakers are just $14.95.

I have it on good authority that they’re one of the only “non-lame” choices when it comes to footwear.

Then again, the same source informs me that I am often “mega-lame,” so I’m not sure what that tells you….

Take your camera kayaking

Have you been looking for a waterproof camera case for your DSLR and accoutrements? Check out this waterproof sling bag by MADE; I have no idea if it’s fabulous, but it is waterproof, and at under $33 shipped, the price certainly is right.

Especially if you need to take your lenses in a kayak with you. (Seriously, check out the user photos. I have apparently led a very sheltered life.)

Now’s the time to get the savings

Right now Kohls is doing a Secret Sale/Power Hours kind of thing. Right now. From 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern today (July 28th, 2009), use coupon code JULY15EDT to save 15% on your purchase—no Kohls charge card necessary!

Orders of $75+ ship for free, and card holders can also use code MVC1233 for free shipping on any size order.

There’s plenty of deals to be had, including their Daily Deal today which is $9.99 Urban Pipeline jeans for guys. Time to stock up!

Me, I’ll just be buying the kids back-to-school socks and underwear. Boring, sure, but way better than fighting the crowds at the store.

A little bit of Woot! math

My son has braces. I’ve mentioned this two or three (hundred) times before, yes? The last time we took him to the orthodontist, he was given a Fair/Poor grade on his brushing. And I was mortified. Look, it’s hard to brush well around braces, and harder still if you’re only nine and easily distracted by shiny things. But the orthodontist’s suggestion that I buy him a $200 sonic toothbrush fell on deaf (frugal) ears.

Today’s Woot of the Day is a two-pack of Oral-B Vitality Sonic Rechargeable Toothbrushes and replacement heads for $24.99. Shipping is $5, so you’re getting 2 brushes and 4 extra heads for $30 shipped.

Let’s compare: Over at Amazon, one brush alone will cost you $17. Then a pack of three replacement heads is another $17. Two brushes and three heads—one head less than you get from Woot—will therefore cost you $51 shipped.

I bought the Woot pack. At this price, both kids can have one, and I can tell the orthodontist what I think of their $200 suggestion.

When in doubt, check the dailies

I seem to have post-travel sickness. Despite having only ventured into a time zone an hour off of here, ever since my return I cannot seem to get enough sleep. I’m just completely exhausted. Jetlag? More like brainlag. Sad, really.

In lieu of all the sleep I crave, I’m upping my coffee intake. We’ll see how that works out.

In the meantime, we’ll always have our daily deals….

Today at Target, choose from scary shoes (seriously, look at them; I am frightened), a cute dress, or a nice Skagen watch. Over at Amazon, you can Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. And over at 6pm.com, choose from deals on Taryn Rose or Sofft, plus the other weekly deals.

And then have some more coffee. Coffee!! I’ll wake up soon, I swear.

Another reminder to ask

Did you happen to get in on the recent deal on a refurbished Garmin Nuvi? After I posted it, I decided it was such a good deal, I’d go ahead and grab one, myself. (Our GPS unit has old maps. It occasionally thinks we’re driving in the forest when we’re on roads.)

Well, it showed up and… the mounting bracket was broken. It turns out that Buy.com’s policy on this sort of thing is that you can return it or you can deal with it. You can’t really exchange an item like this, because they have a limited number and sell out. Hmmm. So I called Garmin. And although I had to wait on hold for a reeeeeeeally long time (I put the phone on speaker and continued working), they were ultimately very helpful and kind and my new bracket is on the way, free of charge.

I love it when a deal comes together.

Discounted peace of mind

I’m the sort of bargain-minded person who generally scoffs at extended warranties. “Don’t buy something that’s going to need it!” I’ll grumble, while telling those kids to get out of my yard. For things like cars, washing machines, etc., I definitely feel like you should research your purchase and be able to find something which doesn’t have a decent chance of breaking early on in its life cycle.

Laptop computers, on the other hand, need extended warranties. Not because they’re no good, but because—if you’re anything like me—we’re talking about a machine that gets moved around, banged here and there, and is important. Extended warranty for a laptop? Yes, please.

I have AppleCare for my MacBook, and it’s been worth every penny I paid. They replaced my hard drive when I had a catastrophic failure (remember that? good times), and recently replaced my keyboard, too. No hassle, no fuss. Love. Have a MacBook but didn’t buy AppleCare? If you’re still in the first year, you can go buy AppleCare from Amazon for 25% off. It extends your warranty to 3 years, by which time you too will likely come to love the magic-makers at your local Genius Bar. Just sayin’.

It’s got eating, and space pirates

My son is on a Pokemon kick right now, which means that when I saw the cover art on The Munchables for the Wii I kind of recoiled, like, “Oh no, another game with cute little creatures, I’m not sure I can take it.”

But then I was pleasantly surprised that this game is catchy, fun, and combines two of my favorite things—eating and space pirates. (What? Okay, I probably have a slight preference for eating. Still.) It’s rated E for Everyone, and indeed, it’s fun for the whole family. Chomp your way through and just see if the hours don’t melt away (and the kids don’t beg you for a turn).

Want to win your very own copy? Of course you do! And I’m giving one away! See how nicely that works out? For a chance to win, first go read the contest rules and regulations, then come back here and leave a comment on this post by 11:59 p.m. Eastern (8:59 p.m. Pacific) on Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 to be entered. Winner to be determined by random number drawing and ability to deflect evil.

Ready? Go!

Lasting memories (and blackmail videos)

Oh, I’m digging today’s Amazon Gold Box deal—it’s Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 2 with Dance Mat for the Wii. Think of the hours of fun! Think of the exercise!

Think of the videos you can make of your children and later show to their prom dates! I’m giddy.

(The fact that it’s just $35 shipped today is the icing on the cake….)
