Bag some books

Sorry for the late notice on this one (shop fast)—today (August 31st, 2009) only, use coupon code RECYCLE to save 20% off any order at the Scholastic Store. Alternatively, code BTS2009 gives you 15% off and free shipping. Whichever one you use, what a great excuse to pick up some new books for the kids!

I know. It’s still money. But it’s books. Educational!

(Sorry, but if I’m going to get sucked in, you are, too. Heh.)

Perfect jeans for perfect you

I don’t know about the rest of you, but there is nothing that can make me feel either like a million bucks or like Jabba the Hut in no time flat like a pair of jeans. When they’re perfect, nothing’s better. When you’ve tried on a dozen pairs and nothing fits right… well, that’s depressing.

I’d never gone the custom-made jeans route until I was contacted by the fine folks at Thimbler, who assured me that my perfect jeans were just a few steps away. I chose the cut, the fabric, and the finish… entered my measurements… and a few weeks later, voila! Jeans that fit me like they were made specifically for me. Because they were! I got exactly what I wanted (dark wash, boot cut, none of the distressing that the young folks seem to love but causes me to designate jeans as “pre-chewed”) in a fit custom-made to conform to my body. Thanks, Thimbler!

Now, I’d argue that paying $87 for their custom jeans is worth every penny, but why buy ‘em when you can win a pair? That’s right—one lucky Want Not reader is going to win her very own pair of custom fit Thimbler jeans! And then we can be twins! (Except please don’t put my name on your tag, because that would be creepy.)

Want to win them? First go read the contest rules and regulations, then come back here and leave a comment on this post by 11:59 p.m. Eastern (8:59 p.m. Pacific) on Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 to be entered. Winner to be determined by random number generation and general awesomeness. (Because you’re totally awesome. Yes, you.)

Ready? Go!

Winner of the Wisk contest

Hooray for everyone who dropped in this weekend and participated in this weekend’s contest for laundry detergent—I see y’all have laundry on the brain about as much as I do, and that’s very comforting. What’s that they say? Misery loves company? Or laundry piles love other laundry piles? Something. I can’t remember.

Sadly, we can have but one triumphant winner for this particular go-’round, and that winner is… commenter 142, Stacey. Congratulations, Stacey—please check your email! You’ll be receiving two bottles of Wisk HE 2x Ultra laundry detergent for your husband. (Hey, she said in her comment that she wanted them for her husband because he does all the laundry. I hope that her husband enjoys the Wisk, and also that he has many, many brothers.)

Big thanks to all who played, and special thanks to the generous folks at Wisk and their PR helpers at Weber Shandwick for donating the goods.

Didn’t win this time? Don’t be blue! I’ve got a very fitting contest coming up later today that might turn that frown upside down….

Everything except Turtle Wax

Do you remember those old late-night television commercials where they’d start off hawking one product, but it would quickly turn into a long string of “But wait—there’s more!”? Instead of just one item, you’d actually get two! And you’d also get a knife that easily slices through a tin can! And a year’s supply of Turtle Wax! But only if you act now!

Well, that’s kind of how it is with the pre-order of Guitar Hero 5 at Amazon right now.

You get the game, obviously. Guitar Hero 5 has 85 songs on it. Then you also get Guitar Hero Van Halen with it, which is an entire second game. But wait—there’s more! You’ll also get a $5 MP3 download credit and a $5 MP3 credit towards tracks on the game. And as if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also get a $10 video game credit towards a future purchase. So, basically, for your $60 you’re getting $120 worth of games, $10 worth of music, and $10 towards more video games.

All in all, I don’t think you’re going to miss the Turtle Wax.

Crud season is coming

Don’t let this be the year that you suddenly realize (in the middle of the night, when the stores are all sold out) that you really need a humidifier for the kids’ room. The featured Target Daily Deal today is a Sesame Street humidifier, and while I certainly wouldn’t pay extra for Elmo and Zoe on the thing, getting it for $15 shipped seems like a pretty sweet deal.

Because there’s always laundry

After I posted about how much I love my new washing machine, a nice lady who works with the folks at Wisk sent me an email to remind me that high efficiency washers require HE detergents to work properly. She sent me a handy link to LaundryHE.com to learn more. And then she sent me a bottle of Wisk HE 2x Ultra to try out, and said hey, if you like it, how about we give a couple of bottles to one of your readers?

She was singing my song. My bottle will get me through 32 loads of laundry, which means that the lucky winner of today’s contest will receive enough detergent to do 64 loads. I don’t know about you, but I do about 3-4 loads of laundry per week, here, so that’d be enough detergent to last me for around 4 months. Not bad.

So, do you want to win a couple of bottles of Wisk HE? Of course you do! First go read the contest rules and regulations, then come back here and leave a comment on this post by 11:59 p.m. Eastern (8:59 p.m. Pacific) on Sunday, August 30th, 2009 to be entered. Winner to be determined by random number generation and merciless obliteration of ring around the collar.

Ready? Go!

Saturday deals

Just a few deals for you today….

This weekend is Friends & Family time at Lane Bryant—you’ll save 30% on almost everything, automatically. Combine that with coupon code 000158121 for an additional 15% off, and grab yourself a few deals.

If you want the top-of-the-line GPS, you can’t beat today’s Amazon Gold Box Deal—it’s the Garmin Nuvi 885T for $310 shipped. Do most of us need or even want a GPS with all the bells and whistles? No, probably not. But if you want one with MSN Direct traffic updates and speech recognition and the ability to make an excellent gazpacho, this is the lowest price I’ve seen on this one. (Okay, I made up the part about the gazpacho. Sorry.)

Shopping eBags this weekend? Spend $50+ and you’ll get an additional 10% off and free shipping.

You’ve only got through the weekend to take advantage of the current savings at Famous Footwear: They’re doing buy 1, get 1 half price, plus you can use coupon code 7TEEN20 for an additional 20% off and free shipping. Stock up before it’s over!

I’ll be back later today with a contest guaranteed to keep you and the family clean and fresh. Don’t forget to check back… unless you prefer being smelly, I guess.

Coffee and a side of Friday Sale

This has been a particularly long week, ’round here. I don’t want to put any pressure on the Amazon Friday Sale, or anything, but this had pretty much be the best sale ever to make up for the rest of the week. Just sayin’.

I wouldn’t have made them a feature in the Electronics section, personally (oh Amazon, why have that section with three measly items?), but still, if you’re looking for a deal on some zoom binoculars, $50 isn’t bad at all.

We already have a chainsaw (thank you, freak winter storm of 2009 where all our trees started falling over), but if we didn’t, I would totally buy this alligator lopper. Because it’s a little chainsaw called an alligator lopper, and it’s adorable with its widdle alligator mouth. (I can’t be certain, but I’m pretty sure this is why my husband does all the tool buying….)

I love these bookends. No need to tell me what a nerd I am; I’m aware.

This litter box is frequently in the Friday Sale, and I giggle at it every time. I mean, sure, $63 is probably a good price for it, but can you really put a price on teaching your cat to go inside a planter to do her thing? I think not.

I have a (lesser) bathtub caddy, and it makes my bathtub feel much fancier than it is. If I had this one with the book stand and wine holder? I’d feel like royalty. This is a great gift for that person who needs to be reminded to pamper herself—pair it with a nice bath salt and you’ll look incredibly generous. I won’t tell you only spent $25.

Looking for a classic stainless set of cookware? I like this Cuisinart one—everything you need, nothing you don’t, right around $100. (Alternatively, they have the hard-anodized nonstick version for about $135, if you prefer.)

It’s baaaa-aaaaack! Everyone’s favorite bread-making machine—absent from the Friday Sale for months—makes its return at just $88 (it’s usually around $100). If you want a bread machine, this is the one to get, and probably the best price you’ll find on it.

Today’s Gold Box Deal doesn’t thrill me (Sims 3 for the PC… meh), but you never know what the Lightning Deals might include, so it’s worth checking over there—it looks like they’re scheduled to have a few different Wii game deals throughout the day.

And don’t forget that the month is almost over—that means your time to scoop up any of the 50 MP3 albums for just $5 each are about to expire for this month.

Have a great Friday, everyone!

Reminder: Acer contest

You did remember that I’m running the biggest Want Not contest to date, one where you could win an Acer Laptop from Intel and BlogHer, right? And that you have until the end of August to enter?

Well, if you didn’t, now you go. Get on over there and enter.

And don’t even think about trying to enter on this post. This post will self-destruct in five seconds.

(Okay, not really. But that’d be cool, no?)
