Adventures on Mt. Olympus and beyond

I know the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan are hardly new, but maybe your kid is just getting into them, now, or maybe you’ve just been borrowing from the library and want a set of your own. Either way, this is one of my son’s favorite series, and right now Amazon has their complete 5-book boxed Percy Jackson set available for just $16, its lowest price ever.

These books are well worth $5.25 apiece. And please—for the love of all that is holy in this bookworm’s world—always read the book before the movie. I’m begging you.

  1. I think I’ll get this and hold it regardless, but Mir, what’s your opinion of appropriate ages for this? My daughter is 7 and OBSESSED with Greek and Roman mythology. She can read at about an 8th grade level, so I’m not terribly worried about vocabulary. What about content, though? Anything too scary for a first grader?

    • I would say that advanced readers who aren’t easily frightened would be okay with this starting at about 8/9 or thereabouts. It’s hard to say, because one of my kids is never frightened by graphic books and the other used to be, so I had different tolerances for them, y’know? I bet your daughter’s not too far off, especially if she’s already a mythology buff—mythology is gorey!

      • OK, I’ll hold it for a bit, then. She seems totally ok with all manners of goriness in the mythology books she is reading (“Oh, really? Cronus ate his babies? Okaaaay…”) but refuses to watch a Disney movie because of the scary voices of the villains. She’s an odd duck that way. Thanks so much!

  2. Thanks Mir! My son LOVES these books and I think we might have one of them already, but I’m grabbing the set. I can never resist a good deal on books.

  3. Thank you!!! I grabbed them, with 4 boys that is a set I knew I was going to need to add to our library. I will say my oldest is 10 and last summer I didn’t think he was ready, but he just tore through Harry Potter must faster than I thought, so maybe he’s ready. 🙂

  4. My 8 yo loves these books and is not easily scared so he has read some of his other books as well.
Huge self esteem bonus directly related to these books: the day he answered several Greek mythology questions right on jeopardy.

  5. Did the movie involve wailing and and angry shouts at your house too?
