Have you taken a look at today’s Amazon Gold Box Deal? It’s the Canon PowerShot S95 for just $229. My husband (who, I’ll remind you, is a professional photographer) says this is one of his top picks for a high-quality point-and-shoot, and even though he already has about a gajillion cameras, I swear he lit up like a Christmas tree when he saw this deal.
Of course, then he covered it up, all “You should tell your readers what a fantastic camera that is!” Yes, it was all just concern for you, you see. So I’m telling you.
If my beautiful wife would leave the room, I would probably order this …
Hey, honey, is that coffee in the other room?

thanks for your glowing recommendation, otto! we have a larger, bulkier camera that we often leave at home because of its bulk and have been looking for a good quality pocket sized camera to take out of the house.
haha – good to know! I think my husband would faint if I bought another camera…
Otto’s adorable! I’m in the same position as Lovely Liz – the other great camera on which I dropped a bundle after months of savings is too big to take along most of the time. Debating whether or not I can justify dropping over $200 for me.
since it doesn’t come with a memory card, point us to the proper memory card deal, puhlease you pretty team.
GREAT CAMERA! My photog boyfriend also salivated over it and bought it full price. The price drop makes it totally worth it!!!
Elizabeth, the husband says Transcend is a good brand for memory cards, and these two class 10 (read: speedy!) cards are both good deals: the 8 GB card is $10.78 and the 16 GB card is $20.
sweet, what a team you and the hubby are!
We are an excellent team. I really like that guy. 😉
? for Otto. I just ordered the Coolpix s7100 for $350. Is this better/same for less $ ? Thanks for info.
I bought this camera about 6 months ago for almost 400$. It is amazing. Does incredible movies and pictures at low light. Love this little baby and I am Not a camera savy person. I do know what works though.
Kylad – I can’t find a reference to a Nikon S7100. I see the P7100, which is a level higher than this camera in terms of functionality, size, durability and, perhaps, image quality. I know some folks who have that camera and have been happy with it, though I have heard of some reliability issues with its predecessor, the P7000. Not enough to label it a problem camera.
There’s an S710 from Nikon, but it appears to be discontinued at this point. The P7100 is comparable to Canon’s G12 but has one really nice feature – the ability to plug in a microphone for better audio when shooting video. To me, that’s a killer feature if you do video.
The image quality differences between the main manufacturers (Canon, Nikon, Olympus, etc.) cone down to how the camera feels to you. Do the controls feel well placed? Do you like the way the menus flow? It’s really hard top make a bad camera these days.
-Otto,
who still hasn’t ordered one and this fence is getting might uncomfortable to sit on
Would this be a good camera for my 14yo daughter to take to the Galapagos next summer?
Otto- I would say if you find yourself lazy to bring your DSLR around, you should get this camera. Unless of course, you already have a good point and click camera laying around that you never use…….
Margaret: The husband says yes, and also he would recommend buying/bringing an extra battery as well. 🙂
Jen: He has an Olympus EP2 for his carry-around point-and-shoot (bought it for him for his 40th!), hence this being a want rather than a need. Heh.
Thanks!
Otto & Mir, You are the Best! Have been wanting to buy my daughter in law a good camera but no idea what to get. Just ordered one & it will be here Wed. thanks to Prime. Merry Christmas to all of your family (4 legged included).
Hubs and I talked it over, and while it’s more than we were gonna spend this year, we took Otto’s recommendation and bought it.
Thanks Mir! You and Otto are pretty!
This is a very informative and helpful site for those of you who make the leap. (or jump off that fence…)

thanks, frances! my camera will be coming tomorrow (squee!) — i’ll start reading up. anxious to be able to take this all of the grandparents’ houses this coming weekend instead of our bulky guy. 🙂 thanks again, mir and otto!!
I loooove seeing this thread – I have been stalking amazon for this price to drop for over a month now and was wondering your husband’s opinion on it. I sucked it up and hit “buy” LAST NIGHT. For $300. Saw this this morning and called amazon’s customer service and they credited me the $70 difference! Thrilled and can’t wait to receive this little baby in my xmas stocking!
I have been needing a new camera since our house flooded last year. I bought a cheap superzoom at Costco that my 13 yo promptly lost. So this was perfect timing! Thank you so much!
