Stephanie was kind enough to point me to this fabulous piece at Lifehacker. Go read it. Now.

The bottom line: Out of warranty? Many companies will help you out, anyway, just in the name of excellent customer service.

I’d find it hard to believe if I hadn’t read the writer’s results. Simply awesome.

  1. Mir, this is awesome! So true, I’ve gotten many a free product by writing. And that seems to be the key – the ole pen and paper, not email.

    Thanks, you’re pretty.

  2. Yes, what GREAT advice!! I think it IS important to let a company know when they have great products, because c’mon, who doesn’t like praise??? I don’t do this nearly enough, but I do remember the happy response I got from a small company that makes gingerbread houses sold at Costco. I also emailed Bissell after they resolved my vacuum issues, and the rep seemed surprised at my thank you.

I just had a great experience with sending back a coffee press to Bonjour. They sent me a new one, no questions asked. Earlier this year I took the time to make a 10-minute phone call to Home Depot about some horrible service, and I got a $50 gift card in return. Today I resolve to finally write my letter to LL Bean about the swimsuit that deteriorated after a month of use. Thanks for sharing this, Mir!

  3. I got my broken 18 month old $400 HP digital camera REPLACED just by writing a letter to the CEO of the company. They sent a new camera (that was most likely reconditioned, but pretty much perfect) and asked only that I put the broken one into the box and send it back using the pre-paid postage label. Nothing can replace good customer service.

  4. I bought my iBook open box from http://www.techforless.com and when the hard drive died 10 months later it was out of the original Apple warranty but I contacted TechForLess and they covered it in full with a check to me for the amount of replacement at my local Apple repair center. Awesome! I can’t say enough about good customer service when I find it and those people are great.

  5. That is an awesome article. Thank you for sharing it.

  6. good to know! 🙂 Thanks for sharing it, you pretty lady you! 🙂

  7. I am so going to try this with my husband’s shoes. You may have just saved us quite a bit with this idea! Thanks, Mir and Stephanie!
