Buy a DVD player, get DVDs

I don’t know a lot about the new DVD technology, so I’m merely going on reviews and what I’ve read, but this Toshiba A3 high-def DVD player has great reviews and is currently $131.98 shipped at Amazon. That’s not a super price (though it’s certainly competitive), but the deal here is that purchase of a qualifying Toshiba player makes you eligible for this rebate which comes in the form of 5 DVDs. Assuming you’re interested in the DVDs offered, that makes it a pretty amazing deal.

(One of the eligible DVDs is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Mmmmm, Johnny Depp….)

  1. For what it’s worth: Two of the three major movie studios have come out to say that they will NOT be supporting the HD DVD format in the future, opting instead to go with Blu-Ray. Or so my husband who is interested in this stuff tells me. So, research if this is a concern for you…

  2. My husband is into the research too, and I’m pretty sure this is the deal he went with. We recently got an HD-DVD for some “really great” price that included free DVDs, so this must be it, right?

If Blu-Ray ends up being the format of choice, it just means he gets to get another new toy (eventually, way, WAY down the road). At least I’m pretty sure that’s what he’s thinking.

Perhaps he’ll chime in–he DOES read here, after all. 😉

  3. the problem is that no one is going to be making the HD DVDs anymore. My hubby is very into this and we just returned this DVD player back to Amazon.

  4. Yep, things are moving towards Blu-Ray (most movie studios have committed to the format), so I’d avoid buying HD-DVD right now. Even if it switches (probably won’t), there will be more deals in the future :).
