Out with the old, in with the (cheaper) new

Every time I mention a deal on video games or consoles at Amazon, someone always pipes up to remind me that places like GameStop habitually let you trade in old games towards new ones, and that that’s a lot more cost-effective.

And it is, if you don’t mind going to the mall to your local participating store. (Me, I’d rather stay at home where there aren’t yet teenagers glaring at me.)

But now Amazon’s taking their cue from the mall stores, because for the next couple of weeks, when you trade in $50 or $75 worth of games, you get Amazon credit and you get money off a new console. That’s right—you’re basically getting double the credit. Trade in $50 worth of games? Get $50 worth of Amazon credit and a $50 credit towards the game console of your choice. Trade in $75 worth of games? Get $75 worth of Amazon credit and a $50 credit towards the game console of your choice.

Assuming you’re toying with moving from one system to another, now may be the time to get on it.

  1. Wouldn’t you know…..we finally purchased a Wii 10 days ago and are wondering what on earth to do with the old PS2 we had from years ago.

  2. It is also worth noting that used games on Amazon are typically much cheaper than buying from Gamestop. And you can turn around and sell games on Amazon/Craigslist/eBay for more than you could get at Gamestop.

Gamestop is great for convenience, but their business model is built on buying your used games for way too little and then selling that game to someone else for way too much.
