Creepy, yet cute

I feel the need to start this out by noting that I personally find the entire Elf on the Shelf phenomenon a little disturbing. “Hey, kids! It’s not bad enough that there’s a fat guy at the North Pole who knows if you’ve been bad or good, but there’s also a little ceramic elf who comes alive every night and spies on you for him!” It’s just… not my thing. That said, I know plenty of families who treasure the tradition of reading the book and moving the elf around and generally sending their children into therapy.

If you want to give the gift of paranoia this special Christmas tradition, you may be interested to know that The Elf on the Shelf is currently just $17.51 at Barnes & Noble, and eligible for free shipping on $25. (For comparison: It’s currently $30 at Amazon.)

Coupon code A8U8C4R should take 15% off the highest-priced item in your cart, too, in case you want to save a little more. And whether or not we agree that the elf is creepy, I think we can all agree on saving a little more.

  1. Ha, I always think that’s so creepy too! My parents had decorations that looked like those guys, but (thank goodness) never tormented us with any stories or moved them around. I’m paranoid enough as it is, thank you.

  2. My 7 and 4 year old are already hoping our elf, Buddy, returns next Christmas. Now…. my 4 year old is testy lately. Maybe the elf needs to do a mid year check in!! 😉

  3. My son got this as an early Christmas gift last year and I have to say, although i think he’s a little creepy, he loved it! Our elf is also called “Buddy” and my son was so excited to look for Buddy every morning.

  4. Our kids love this, just bought it last year. It’s not creepy to us, and it really adds to the magic of christmas 🙂

  5. My daughter has had this for several years and still loves it at age 7. It may look a bit creepy but it is a great tradition to start. Ours is named Kirby by the way.

  6. I’m with you. It completely creeps me out. I considered getting it for Halloween!
