We’re about due for a “you’ll never believe what I got” post, yes?
I haven’t been thrifting in months (no time, no energy), but hit Goodwill yesterday because it’s finally getting colder here and I wanted to look for some sweaters and/or long-sleeved shirts. Naturally I found absolutely nothing I wanted, though I’d picked up a few items for my teens by the time I decided I’d just run through the dresses rack before checking out and going home.
It was one of those I-don’t-really-need-it-but-I-can’t-pass-it-up sorts of things: A silk Banana Republic dress with the $130 price tag still attached, for… $3. And now it’s mine (for less than the cost of a fancy cup of coffee).
What’s your best recent score?
I’ve been dying to brag about this somewhere. I found a pair of Lululemon workout pants at my Goodwill for $3! Whatwhattt?
I went consignment store shopping with my mom on Saturday, at a store that’s usually pretty high, focusing as they do on designer labels. But we happened to hit some 90% off racks, and a whole room where everything was $1.00. I got a pair of Ferragamo heels, some super cute flats, another pair of Sofft heels (so comfy!), and a pretty sweater, for $27. My mom beat me, though. She got a pantsuit, three shirts, 2 sweaters, a skirt, and a pair of slacks for under $10.
A silk Paul Smith shirt in a gorgeous florid rose print for $4 – it’s one of those “I love your shirt, where did you get it?” pieces. I smile….My husband, who still need to dress nicely while losing weight is becoming an ebay fiend – his latest bargain was a pair of new Zegna pants for $15 including shipping.
Well I just ordered from Lord & Taylor using the code from your previous post. I got a leather belt for my husband, a blouse, bra and panties and a skirt for me all for $68. Definitely not as good as your deal but I’m pretty happy!
Brand new Ann Klein black trench for $10 from a local thrift store.
Speaking of good deals…remember those Home Depot filters from a few months ago? I bought them, they were back ordered for months but I didn’t care because CHEAP. They came when I was on vacation in July and I just stuck the box in a closet. Didn’t open the box until this weekend when I needed a new filter and they are the wrong brand and wrong size (completely different than what the packing slip says, so I know I ordered the right thing). Calling customer service today, but seriously, who doesn’t open a package for 3 months? Me. Ugh.
We should start a club! Same thing happened to me – backordered forever, and a couple inches off in size. Opened, but didn’t look closely enough, because we didn’t realize it was wrong until a couple months down the road. Right brand, though.
I did pretty well yard sale shopping this weekend. I got three dresses, a sweater and a jacket for my teenager for 1$ each, a nice tan Coach leather hobo bag (several water spots came right off with saddle soap!) for 5$, a new-looking bike for 4$, (I have no idea who priced that but, whatever- SCORE!); a Waterford crystal candle holder in the box for .50 (that’s going on eBay); a pair of knee-high Converse tennis shoe/boot things for my ten yr old for 1$ (weird looking but she loved them), a 3×5 foot wool rug for 2$; a set of Craftsman sockets for 2$; a necklace for .25 and a couple of books. I don’t think I even spent 20$ all told.
My best ever was a black velvet open coat from the 60s with three-quarter sleeves from a super-fancy, now defunct local department store. I found it in a local, very thrifty (as in, prices cheaper than Goodwill) thrift shop for… $4. Had it dry cleaned and it is in perfect condition – I could probably turn around and sell it on Etsy for $300+ but I love it too much. Found some other great deals at the same store – a set of 5 teal bicentennial mason jars with glass tops and old-fashioned bails for $7, and a set of cool 60s “pick your poison” cocktail glasses that sell for $100+ on Etsy. I find that I can get much better deals at the really grungy thrift ships than at Goodwill (or Salvation Army, but I won’t shop there because of their political/religious activities). The chain thrifts seems to mark stuff up lately, to the tune of things being priced higher than they would be new, and vintage stuff is priced at ebay/etsy highest prices even when those are based on pristine condition and the one in the thrift store is in terrible condition. It’s weird and counter-productive.
My daughter found a tulle-laden, sparkly dress for homecoming at goodwill the other day for just $10. It, too, had the tags still attached. She had paired it with a pair of clearance shoes from Payless ($10) and we have a formal dance outfit for $20! I love my thrifty teen!
Boden pants for my tween with tags still on. $2 thrift store. Score!
I love love love thrift stores.
Yesterday I found a brand new Sophie Giraffe for my new baby for $.99 in the dog toys section. I almost ordered one this past weekend for her. Glad I didn’t.
I always find really high end kids clothes too. Matilda Jane dresses for $2.99. JCrew jackets for $3.99. Yesterday I also found a cute shirt for my toddler from Mimi & Maggie for $.99.
Yay, thrifty teens! not goodwill which I love, but my daughter found a gorgeous homecoming dress for $17 at Nordstrom Rack., Another girl, who cleverly fashioned a dress out of duck tape, bragged about spending only $20. My daughter secretly smirked.
I found a breathtaking, tags-on, Anne Klein silk dress at Goodwill for $7, originally $165. It was in all my mom’s favorite colors, and just her size. Happy Birthday, Mom!
