I’m a fool for food storage

Last year I valiantly attempted to switch all of our food storage containers over to Pyrex, and I almost did it, too. If not for those meddling kids I could’ve prevailed! But, well, those meddling kids would prefer not to take heavy glass containers in their lunch boxes.

So now I have glass containers for at-home storage and an assortment of plastics I use for packing lunches. (My life is complicated, y’all.) And the plastics I buy for lunches slowly disappear over the course of the school year, because my children are… ummm… children.

Anyway, I was cruising around looking for some replacements, today. I see that this 12-piece set of Rubbermaid Lock-its is just $10.50 at Amazon (you may need to look in the “More Buying Choices” column to get it from Amazon rather than a vendor), and eligible for free Super Saver Shipping or Prime. Meanwhile, 24-piece Rubbermaid Easy Find Lid set is just $11, and while I was there I looked up these Produce Savers because my stepmom swears by them and I keep meaning to buy some. Amazon claims $12.98 is the regular price for that set, but the other buying options are a lot more expensive, so I don’t know.

What I do know is that all lunch containers are going to be stapled to the children from now on, so that I get them back.

  1. This is one reason I don’t do the “bento box” style lunches – the first day I do a cute little plastic container with other smaller plastic containers, I know I’ll be mad when they don’t all come home from school. Just easier to stay away from the cute! 🙂

  2. I bought the produce savers in Sept (and love them), but I paid 17.45 for the set – so $12.98 is a great price.

  3. I love how they say “usually ships in 1 to 2 months” They must be very busy at the rubbermaid factory.

  4. Ooo, so tempted but it says shipping 1 to 2 months. Really?

  5. I saw that, too. Sometimes those estimates are wrong. Unless you’re currently having a food storage emergency, I’d say it’s probably worth the wait (however long it ends up being).

  6. I make the kids pay for any containers they lose. It has cut down on losses significantly. Not that they *really* care, because they have no idea how much money they have in the parental bank (no cash for them since I found about $200 in the basement, they were using it to play something). But somehow threatening them with “lose it, you’ll pay for it” has helped. They also don’t know how much anything costs (sigh, even the oldest at 12), so as far as they know, it could be as much as, say, a DS game or a new Webkinz.

  7. I have that 24-piece set (Xmas gift from my MIL last year), and it is awesome! The lids really do snap together to make storage a lot easier, and the containers are really sturdy and clean up very well. I highly recommend it!

  8. I also have the Easy Find Lid set and I love it! All of the sizes get used and they store very nicely, even though I forget to snap the lids together about 90% of the time.
