It’s time to load your Kindle

Guess what I got for Christmas, finally. A Kindle of my very own! Yes! (We did our family Christmas a little early, before heading out to see extended family and celebrate elsewhere.) I am so excited about this Kindle, you have no idea.

And of course I want to find the best book deals, so you can imagine my glee at discovering the Kindle Big Deal, an assortment of deeply discounted Kindle books available at special prices only until December 23rd.

If you’re gifting a Kindle, this would be a great way to put a few titles on it as an additional surprise before you even hand over the package. And if you own your own Kindle (or have the app on your computer or other device), well, merry merry to you!

  1. I’m eager to hear all about your Kindle experience – which one did you get? Do you love it? Does it do everything you dreamed about?

  2. Me too! Me too! Did you get the kindle with offers? If so, are they good?

  3. I only JUST got it, so I don’t have a lot of answers for you yet! I did get the base model, with special offers, and am looking forward to seeing what it gives me. 😀

  4. I’ve had my 1st. Gen. Kindle for more than 2 years and still love it. Two more people in our family are getting them for Christmas — for the price, you just can’t beat ’em! Sadly, with this sale collection, there are only 1 or 2 books that are of any interest, but thanks for the heads up, Mir. Happy reading!

  5. I could be wrong, but the problem with gifting these books ahead of time is you have to buy them for the person (you can’t buy them in you account and “give” them later, so if you bought them NOW, you would be giving away the surprise.

  6. Hurry, Mir, hurry! Did you know the iPhone wants to correct your name to MIT? Ooh you must be smart! 🙂

  7. I believe that this depends on whether you’ve already “attached” the Kindle to an email address. I know that when my mother-in-law’s Kindle was purchased for her, an email address was created especially for that Kindle, so they were able to attach and load it before even giving it to her. If it’s “unattached,” then you are correct, Jay.

  8. If you “like” the Amazon Kindle Facebook page, their daily deals will show up on your wall. The type of book varies, and the prices can be either special deals, or sometimes free. A friend of mine is an expert at getting free e-books for her Kindle, but she tends to like older works – not much into current best sellers, which are always pricey.

  9. I got the base keyboard model with special offers last month. I’ve taken two trips since then and love, love, love only having to pack something the size of a small paperback rather than several books. And no worries about running out of reading material. I’ve even been borrowing books from my library. So far, the selection there is very limited, but should grow. And no worries about misplaced or overdue library books. 🙂

I looked at the lowest end model that just came out, but the additional $20 seemed worth it for twice the capacity and battery life. My middle daughter longs for a Kindle Fire — no more need to haul around a large survival manual. In fact, she can fit all the survival manuals she wants on it. I think her adoring big brother is going to come through for her during Chanukah.

Get the cover with the internal light if you can. It charges off of the Kindle, and has come in handy on many occasions.

  10. We may not be talking about the same thing, but you can gift a book by clicking “Give as a Gift.” You can then send an e-mail announcement to any address and you can choose any date in the future for it to show up. It’s probably easier for the recipient if you send it to the address the recipient uses for Amazon purchases, but I’m almost positive that’s not actually necessary.

  11. Good to know that you can pick a different date for that email, too. Thanks, Barbara!

  12. Thanks for the tip, Mir, excited about trying some of these $1 reads!! Don’t forget that you can get free kindle books on Amazon too (my copy of the bible was free and I love not having to lug my “hefty” bible to church and when we travel!) Also, my local library had 6000 kindle books as of early Nov (when I got mine) and now they are pushing 7000, so the options only grow!!! Plus, I figured out a way to keep the books on there after they have expired incase I don’t finish it in 3 weeks 🙂

  13. Also, there is a special running now at indiebookblowout.com with… You guessed it, indie authors deeply discounting their Kindle books. (I have affiliation other than liking a good deal on Kindle books)

  14. Well, isn’t this just super handy? First you give away a Kindle Fire that I just happen to WIN and then you tell us about this deal. It must have been hard to send the Kindle away, but I am loving it and I’m so glad you have your very own now, too! Thanks for all you do to keep us up on the deals, Mir. You know everything.

  15. And to make it all even better, if you are a prime member you can ‘borrow’ a book every month from Amazon. Our household now has a first generation, a second generation and two Fires. Love all the free tv and movies on the Fire. Kindles are great.

  16. Mir — I have hear that when you order the Kindle (of any flavor) that it comes preloaded with your purchasing info, so one may make 1 touch purchases right out of the box. Can you or anyone confirm if this is true? have heard you can work around it by saying it is a gift, but the idea is a bit unsettling….

  17. Frank: You can set it up that way if you have all of the account information that you want to attach it to (if you want it for yourself, or if you know all info—including password—for another account), but you don’t have to. My husband bought mine unattached, and I had to set it up with my info.

  18. How on earth did you know we bought one for our mother for Christmas?? 🙂 I just sent out your link to my five siblings, reminded everyone to choose” send as gift”, and send after Dec 26th so we don’t give away the surprise. I hope she enjoys getting the Kindle, then is surprised with the books that show up in her email. One sister is purchasing the gift book, having it emailed to herself, and then printing the email and putting it in a box for Mom as suggested on the Kindle page.

  19. That Donald Harington novel is an exceptionally good one. He was a local author here in the Ozarks and is one of our (odd but) undiscovered gems.
