Let me just say right off the bat that I am irked that LEGO felt the need to make an entire line out of building sets that will specifically appeal to girls. Girls like regular LEGO just fine, in my experience. The pinkness of it all disturbs me. That said… like most everything else LEGO makes… I kind of end up going, “Oh, hey, that’s cool,” in spite of myself. I realize that I am kind of at odds with myself in this way. I’m choosing to ignore it for the moment.
Right now Amazon has two little LEGO Friends sets at their lowest price ever, and wouldn’t they be perfect for stockings? You can snag the Bunny Hutch Playset or Hedgehog Hideaway Playset each for just $3.39 apiece, which is pretty much a no-brainer except for the fact that they’re add-ons, so that’s only going to work if you’re buying other stuff, as well.
This LEGO Friends Camper (my favorite part: little LEGO bicycles! they’re not even pink!) is down to $25, which is close to the lowest price it’s ever been, and that might be a good pick if you were going that route.
Overall, I still prefer “regular” LEGO, but some of the details here are pretty adorable.

I think part of the appeal is the much more realistic looking people in the LEGO friends sets. My daughter loves LEGO friends and I have no problem with the bright, more feminine colors. I wish they had had those colors when I was a kid. In the end, to each her own!
Absolutely! (Tiny bicycles!!)
They had those some of those same sets marked down on the Lego site a week or so ago, may have been $3.99. I got a couple for Christmas presents. Little dude is trying to convert everybody to the church of Lego….
Why am I only seeing the little sets at 6.99?
And I totally agree with you about the LEGO Friends- regular LEGOS are fairly unisex, why make them feel more ‘boyish’? But the powder blue bricks ARE pretty…
Ummm… because Amazon keeps changing prices to drive me insane? Boo.
My daughter likes the girls sets just to get the tiny animals for use in the rest of the Legos we have. I am on agreed with mixed feelings about the ‘girls’ sets. But my son plays with them with his sister just as much as she plays with his Monster Fighters. And truthfully, the last few years of sets that aren’t just assorted brick boxes have been pretty heavily boy directed… aside from Harry Potter, what if my girl doesn’t love Star Wars (she does) or Ninjago (she doesn’t)?
And then I remind myself, I am not the kid. Just let ’em play. And thanks Mir… stocking stuffers!
Yep, it looks like the price has gone up to $6.99 now. That was fast! We watched a Lego Friends cartoon on Netflix the other day. It was about what you’d expect for something like that. I was able to turn it into a teachable moment by talking about shows that are really just a commercial to sell the toys.
I’m disappointed the price went up—I definitely would have bought those for my daughter’s stocking. I have that same conflicted feeling: I’m annoyed they had to make a Girl Version—and yet, I’m more drawn to them myself, and so is Elizabeth.
I argue why not make legos that appeal to scenarios that little girls might find more appealing to play out? My daughters have the Lego City stuff and the Lego Friends stuff, but if you try to show them the Star Wars Legos or the Chima ones, they aren’t drawn to it. How wonderful that Legos are made to appeal to all kinds of kids, and that they are drawing in girls to use the skills to make tomorrow’s engineers.
I totally agree. There are so many girls that would never consider playing with Legos if it wasn’t for the Friends line.
Yay! I checked this morning, and it had gone back up to $6.99.
But I checked again just now, and it’s back down to $3.99! Snagged them!
This all reminds me of this awesome post from Amalah recently, about her oldest son, Noah, buying LEGO Friends and totally not caring what anyone else thought about it. 🙂

Just picked up three different sets of these for $3.99 each from TJMaxx. Great for shipping across the country for gifts for nieces.
