November 28, 2007 | Contests
It’s at times like these that I get all misty and nostalgic…
… and wish I’d coded the blog to include numbers on the comments. Dang.
Nevertheless, I hopped over to my favorite random number generator and asked it to pretty please give me a number between 1 and 372 (!). It selected 261. I then carefully counted through all these pretty comments and finally landed on 261: The winner of a year’s subscription to a Scholastic Kids Gift-of-the-Month club is bec 37!
Bec graciously accepted the news that she’d won, exclamation points and all, and indicated that her boys will be thrilled to receive a year of Veggie Tales. I’m a little jealous, frankly. Because I am totally a pirate who doesn’t do anything.
Thanks to everyone who played along, and a great, big, huge THANKS to the folks at Scholastic Kids for their generous offer. I love this sort of matchmaking!

Looking to stock up on some plus-size clothing? The big Buy 1, Get 1 Free sale at Catherines is on now through December 4th, 2007. The usual exclusions apply (read the fine print), but much of their inventory qualifies. There’s over 500 items in their clearance section, alone!
Make it even better with a code: 776874307 gives you 20% off an order of any size, 776874406 gives you $20 off $75+, and 776874505 gives you free shipping on orders of $70 or more.

Novica is offering free shipping on jewelry and gifts, and boy do they have some neat stuff. I’m not even sure how to describe them. World crafts? I don’t know; just check it out.
Make it a sweet deal with a coupon: Use NGS555 for $15 off $30+ or NOVICA243 for $10 off with no minimum.
You can sort by price so it should be easy to maximize your savings. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself falling in love with all sorts of things over there.

If you’ve been shopping at Amazon lately (and lord knows I have; how exactly did we survive when every purchase meant you had to go to the store and actually walk around looking for things?), you’ve probably noticed that a lot of items are coming with a bonus magazine subscription when you spend a certain amount.
I don’t know about you, but I have enough magazines.
When you get your reminder email to redeem the offer and select which title you’d like to receive, down at the bottom in itty, bitty fine print it gives you the address to which you can send your order receipt for a refund of the magazine subscription price. That’s like a nice little $10 rebate you weren’t expecting. (Lose the email? No worries. The fine print for Home & Garden eligible purchases is here
, and for Apparel & Shoes it’s here
.)
Don’t just blow it off; it’s money you’re entitled to. Make sure you get it.

I’m in stocking-stuffing mode, and you’d better believe that I believe in truth, liberty, and a sugar cookie lip balm in the toe of your stocking on Christmas morning. I’m just sayin’. There’s more cheapie stuff listed here, too.
Ship any size order for free with coupon code EREPFS.

Tis the season to go a’visiting. You know me—I believe food is an appropriate gift for just about anything. Make it all fancy and such by putting it on something pretty they can keep.
This Mikasa winter platter is crying out for some good cookies. (At only $14.99, maybe you’ll even use ‘em for teacher gifts.)
I’m less enthralled by this Godinger crystal bowl, though it’s even cheaper at $6.99. It just doesn’t seem right for cookies. Pudding, maybe.
Mmmmm… pudding. (What were we talking about…?)

Have someone on your gift list who—like me—is too cheap to get HBO, but appreciates a good series? You might want to check out the 60% off HBO original series DVDs at Best Buy
. Through December 1st, 2007, these deals are available online only. (And it looks like quite a few are sold out already, but maybe you’ll find one you wanted.)

Suzanne writes:
Dear Mir,
I was searching the web for tips on how to redo my wardrobe, and I came across the perfect site… yours! I am a 16 year old girl on a rather small income. My parents won’t let me get a job until I’m done with high school, and I have to pay for gas. I get $100 a month from them. While this sounds like more than enough for someone my age, my problem is that I would like to give my wardrobe a little make over. I’ve always been the boring T-shirt and jeans kind of girl. Recently my style taste has changed and I’d like to wear something more fashionable. I am into darker clothing, without going over into the goth/emo area. I really like the layered look too. Also, most of my friends are guys and I like imitating their styles with a feminine touch. I have a closet full of clothes, but it seems like I’m missing what I need to complete my look. Do you have any advice on some key pieces that I could use to boost my style a little (without leaving me stuck at home because I can’t afford gas)?
I’m so touched that there’s a teenager in the world who doesn’t think I’m hopelessly dorky, that I am now mentally hugging Suzanne and stroking her hair. She, on the other hand, is now questioning her decision to write to me.
Today we’re going to do something a little bit special. I shared Suzanne’s query with my buddy Susan over at Friday Style, and we’re teaming up to give a complete answer that covers both style and shopping. (more…)

Don’t even look at this if you don’t have a little bit of time to kill.
Right now there are tons of shoes marked over 80% off at Amazon, making for some tremendous deals. But if you want to make the deal absolutely smoke, find something you like and then pricematch it at Zappos. (Directions on how to pricematch are located here.)
Happy hunting!
[Edited to add: Oh, the sport, I love it! I just ordered these $195 Joan & David slingbacks
from Endless—which, yes, is owned by Amazon—and pricematched them to the same pair at Amazon. (Zappos didn’t have them, hence the hop over to Endless.) Final cost to me: $15. How cute am I going to be in those next summer? So cute! Dude, $200 shoes are even cuter when you only pay $15 for ‘em!)]
