Archive for February, 2008

Hey, it’s February 29th, and that means that you should do something special today. (It only happens every 4 years, so why not?) Of course, a good place to start would be the Amazon Friday Sale.
I don’t know what a normal person needs a Dremel kit for, but my husband assures me that it’s important. So important, in fact, that one year he got two for Christmas. Now he can be like Edward Scissorhands… er, Dremelhands… um, clearly I have no idea where I was going with this.
Likewise, I’m sure I’m supposed to understand why this Leatherman Surge is a great deal at $58, but all I see is a grown-up boy scout pocketknife. Oh well.
I’ve often considered buying one of these car jump-starters because it seems like such a great idea. Then I remember that I’ve only ever had a dead battery once in my entire life. But if you live and/or drive out in the middle of nowhere regularly, 47% off is sort of tempting.
Scoooooooooooooooba!!
Here’s a deal on a full size memory foam. (In theory I love the idea of memory foam, but in practice I can’t help feeling that it’s simply space-age quicksand.)
Hey, I think I found the world’s fanciest rice cooker!
Ummmm… ewwwwwww?
(Bonus Leap Day goodness: Orders of $29+ get free shipping over at Linens N Things from 12 - 4 p.m. EST today only
.)
Have a fabulous Leap Day, my friends. I plan to celebrate the day by pretending I’m still 29, myself….

We had 210 entries into the contest for Mabel’s Labels gift certificates, and ye olde random number generator has spoken. Our first winner is commenter 147, Miriam (nice name, by the way), who will receive her the certificate for sticky labels, as was her choice. Our second winner is commenter 17, Susan, who will receive the certificate for iron-ons or tag-mates.
Many thanks to everyone who played, and a extra-special big thanks to Mabel’s Labels for donating the prizes. In addition, Mabel’s Labels agent and fellow blogger Lee has offered up the following deal to Want Not readers: Purchase your Mabel’s Labels by going here and you can use coupon code NLEEFEB08 to take 10% off your order. (I’m not sure how long that code is valid, but I’m guessing only through the end of the month…?)
As always—stay tuned; more contest goodness is coming!

McDonald’s is giving out free 4-piece chicken McNuggets today, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. I don’t know why. And I’ll state for the record that I don’t believe McNuggets to be actual food, but that I do occasionally let my children have them, anyway. Hypocrite, thy name is Mom.
Today and tomorrow it looks like you can get a free McSkillet Burrito with the purchase of any medium or large drink, too. (Also not food. Whatever.)
Find your local golden arches here, if you’re so inclined.

Have I mentioned that my son is about to get a mouthful of metal? We’re not hoping to turn him into a cyborg, or anything… he’s getting two palate expanders, and later, braces. My daughter is getting her braces within the next year.
(Um, shop through my links, please. Often. Ha!)
Anyhoo, what do I see every time I take them in to the orthodontist or the dentist? That’s right—I see a great big Sonicare display, assuring me that an expensive Sonicare toothbrush will get their teeth clean even behind all of that metal, while regular toothbrushes mean that after I pay for their braces I can also pay for all the fillings they’ll need. (It doesn’t say exactly that on the display. But something close!)
Needless to say, they don’t have a Sonicare. I don’t let them floss with $20 bills, either. But lookie here: Kohls has the Sonicare A4100 toothbrush for just $50.99 (add it to your bag to see the price). Use code MVCCHARGE15 with your Kohls charge to take off another 15%, or NEW9914 to take 10% off if you don’t have a Kohls card. Shipping is just $.99, or use code MVC4242 for free shipping with your Kohls charge (it stacks with one of the other coupons).
With tax, my total was $47.43… a few bucks cheaper than Amazon’s price. (Or it would’ve been, if I’d bought it. I didn’t, of course, because I’m a terrible mother.)

If you’ll be hitting Office Max (the real store, not the online one) this week, don’t forget to print out some bonus coupons before you go.
Pretty reader Sue, who was kind enough to send this along, pointed out that coupon to get the 12-pack of retractable Sharpies for $2 is pretty smokin’. (Limit 2 per customer.) (And she may not have said smokin’, but let’s not mince words here.)

Hey, it looks like Amazon is having a Grocery Clearance
thingie right now—buy $25+ of qualifying items, and use coupon code CLEARALL to take $10 off your order instantly (and you still get free Super Saver Shipping).
The catch? Well, there’s isn’t a place to see a complete list of items, so you’ll need to do some surfing around. Thanks to mamacita for figuring this out: Here’s a link to all eligible items
. Also, some things are on sale in one flavor while another isn’t, etc. Now that I’m a Senseo convert, I went looking for those expensive little pods… and I found that the Hazelnut Waltz, Kenya Blend, and Variety Packs qualify, but other flavors don’t. Go figure. (But the ones that qualify are 33% off already, so you could buy two and get 8 packs of pods for $3.39/pack, which still beat the grocery store hands down.)
Bottom line: There’s deals to be had if you’ve got some time and some patience.

I’m starting to suspect that Lillian Vernon is always having some sort of “Big Sale,” but that’s okay, I suppose, because I am not one to turn down bargain prices. Still, you’d think they could mix it up a bit. This one could be the Big Sale, and the next one could be the Kinda Medium Sale. Later, they can have the Gigantic Sale, and sure, maybe not a lot of people will hop over for the Small Sale, but you never know.
(Yeah, there’s a reason I’m not in marketing….)
Anyway, there’s a couple of available coupons that are expiring at the end of February (Friday!), so I just thought I’d mention that. Use coupon code 438830900 to take 20% off your $75+ order; or use 567860100 to take 10% off of $60+, 15% off of $70+, or 20% off of $80+.
Happy savings!

It’s time again for Jos. A. Bank’s extra 50% off all clearance
sale—a great time to stock up on shirts and other dapper gentlemanly items.
Even if he’s not really a dapper gentleman. Hey, he can at least look like one.

Hey, remember when you were young and carefree and life insurance was for old people? No? That’s because now you’re old and senile. Ha!
Everything I want to tell you today can be summed up in this one sentence: You need to have life insurance. The end.
But if you want to get picky—and more specific—about it, read on.
If you have kids, you need life insurance. If you have a spouse, you need life insurance. If you are a single person old enough to not be on your parents’ health insurance anymore, you need life insurance. Have I covered everyone here, yet? You, in the back! You need life insurance! (The only exception here is children. Children do not need life insurance, no matter how many daytime television commercials tell you otherwise.)
The reasons vary, the amounts vary, how you handle it may vary, but you need it and you need it now. Yes. Repeat after me: I need life insurance. (more…)
