Gluten-free convenience, now more affordable

I don’t do a ton of from-mix baking, because I am 1) cheap and 2) kind of a hippie about making my own food. But sometimes convenience wins out, and there’s no denying that it’s a lot easier to get the kids to make me brownies if all they have to do is follow the directions on the box. (What…?)

Amazon is offering specials on lots of gluten-free products right now in honor of Celiac Awareness Month. (Were you aware… that some people can’t tolerate gluten? Now you are!) If you want a deal on some box-mix goodies to stash in the cupboard, now’s the perfect time to grab your gluten-free Betty Crocker mixes:

There’s a $6 off coupon to clip on both the Devil’s Food Cake and Yellow Cake 6-packs of gluten-free mixes. And there’s a $4 off coupon to clip on the Chocolate Chip Cookie and Brownie 6-packs of gluten-free mixes. As always, buy via Subscribe & Save to get another 5% off and free shipping, plus if you buy 5+ S&S items in a month you’ll save 15% on everything (or 20% if you’re part of Amazon Mom).

This brings the prices down to around $2-$3/box, and these are usually around $5/box at my supermarket. Not as cheap as baking from scratch, but a good deal on box mix simplicity, hold the gluten.

Get your own star

I’ve always thought that whole “have a star named for you” thing was a sweet idea, but kind of overpriced. I mean, $75+ for a certificate, essentially? Nice idea, but… I guess I’m too cheap. (Surprise!)

But check it out, because today’s Mamasource Deals include one just for cheapskates like me: For just $9, you can get the full Your Star Forever package that normally costs $79. Name a star for someone, get all the swag that goes with it. And did I mention the part where it only costs $9?

This is the perfect look-like-a-big-spender gift, now. Grab a voucher and you have a year to redeem it, too. That means any upcoming star-worthy events (birth, graduation, whatever) could be covered for under $10.

Gel manicures at home, for less

Let me fully admit right up front that I do not understand this whole gel nail polish craze, other than that people swear it lasts longer, looks better, and possibly cures cancer (maybe not that last part). I almost never wear nail polish on my hands, on account of I am klutzy enough, thanks, and don’t need further visual evidence of whatever I’ve just tripped over or fallen into.

That said, if you’re intrigued by the gel thing, I can show you a cheaper way to do it.

Right now Drugstore.com is offering an extra 30% off everything in the makeup & accessories department. Search for sensationails kit to find the SensatioNail Gel Polish Starter Kit marked down to $49.99. (For reference: This kit is currently $70 at Amazon.) Add the kit to your cart and apply coupon code 5DB56E1A to drop the price to $34.99. At that point it’ll ship for free, too, so you’re getting the kit for about half price and free shipping.

I still don’t know if it’s the miracle everyone claims it is, but for less than the cost of two cheap manicures, it seems like an affordable way to check it out.

A little Melissa & Doug to wrap up the weekend

Psssst! If you’re surfing around online while watching the Chopped: All Stars finale tonight (uhhh… don’t judge me, just saying maybe someone else is… doing the same thing I am…), you might be pleased to know that this adorable Melissa & Doug deluxe furnished dollhouse is currently down to just $55.13 at Amazon—its lowest price ever. That’s the wooden dollhouse plus all of the furniture you need, and a 4-doll family.

I am a sucker for wooden dollhouses. I’m also sucker for a price drop like this.

It’s like What to Wear Friday

It’s another great day to check out the Target Daily Deals for clothing and shoes for the entire family. $8 sweaters for boys, $10 sandals, $4 shirts for girls, and a fantastic deal on Liz Lange Maternity for those in need of it—buy 1, get 1 half off, plus free shipping, plus an additional 10% off on $50+. And ladies’ spring dresses! Lots of choices, is my point.

And as long as I’m picking up some sandals for my kid, I probably need a new dress, right…?

Heeeere, mousey mousey mousey

Are you a delicate flower like me who often really wants a mouse to use with your laptop, but can’t quite justify the expense just because of said delicate flower-ish-ness?

I can solve your problem for about the cost of a (fancy) cup of coffee. You’re welcome, in advance.

Today one of the Bonus Deals of the Day at Best Buy is a Dynex wireless mouse for just $4.99 with free shipping. Easy-peasy, just stick it in your briefcase and voila, spare mouse to whip out on business trips or in the waiting room or wherever.

Soft clothing for the kids makes moms happy

I don’t see how this is a Mother’s Day thing, exactly, unless you’re going with the whole “happy kids make for a happy mom” thing. But as we always say ’round here—don’t knock a sale, no matter how weird it seems.

With that in mind, go ahead and shop at Soft Clothing over the next few days and you can use coupon code thanksmom for 40% off everything! Shipping is free if you spend $150+, too, but at 40% off shipping is easier to swallow if you have to.

This is the best clothing for sensitive kiddos, hands down. Soft (just like the name says), plus no hard or pokey bits or rough seams. I am still hoping against hope that they’ll expand into adult sizes, as my sensitive kiddos no longer fit into the few treasured pieces we own.

Anyway, check ’em out if you haven’t yet. 40% off is a great excuse.

Another good day to save at LOFT

Had your eye on a sale item at LOFT that wasn’t quite on-sale enough? Right now everything that’s on sale is an extra 60% off, automatically.

Shipping is free on $125+, or a flat $8.95 otherwise. Though there’s tons of stuff on sale, so you shouldn’t have much trouble meeting the minimum.

Who says it’s not pumpkin season?

Alert reader Maria dropped by the Want Not Facebook page to let me know that she ordered this 4-pack of Pumpkin Pancake & Waffle Mix from Amazon for under $6. (It’s currently priced at $5.36; buy it via Subscribe & Save for free shipping and an additional discount.) She says she was concerned it was a labeling error and she’d only get one canister, but it was, indeed, four! (A quick check shows that other flavors of these Golden Malted batter mixes tend to run about $19 for 4.) At this price you’re basically paying less than it costs them to ship it to you.

I make my own pancake mix, because I’m a hippie and because I’m gluten-free, but at this price I could see where this would be handy to have in the pantry (or to buy to donate to local food bank). Thanks, Maria!

Just don’t buy Mom dishes

I don’t know; Mother’s Day is a weird thing, I think. Probably Mom just wants to know that you love and appreciate her. Is that so hard? Would it kill you?? (Oh, sorry. Mom Guilt Autopilot took over there, for a second….)

Where was I? Oh, right. So listen, I don’t know that dishes are a great “we love you” gift, but far be it from us to pass up a sale—right now at Oneida, the more you spend, the more you save. Use code MD10 for $10 off $50+, code MD25 for $25 off $100+, code MD50 for $50 off $160+, or code MD100 for $100 off $300+. Should you use it for something for Mom? That’s up to you, but if you’ve been wanting new dishes or silverware or another large-ish kitchenware purchase, this could be the time to buy.

Shipping is automatically free on $99+. Any Mother’s Day guilt you may feel is free.
