Could you possibly need more toys?

I can’t imagine that anyone who’s a regular reader here still needs more toys, but in case you do, check your local Target. This week and next should be the big toy clear-out; some stores are already at 75% off. Be sure to scan anything with a red sticker, as it may be marked 50% off but in fact dropped to 75% and just not labeled.

There’s about 20 pages of clearance toys online, too, but if you can get to the store you’ll have better selection/prices and no shipping fees.

More Eddie Bauer

I know I just posted a code from them, but here’s another one: Make any $10+ purchase at Eddie Bauer, and you can take $10 off your total with coupon code NPSTRCLS. Shipping and handling starts at $7.95, so this is basically free shipping and a little extra in your pocket.

Try not to spend it all in one place, you wild thing, you.

I’m dreaming of the beach

I know that for many of you, Summer seems impossibly far away. Fear not! It will come! Eventually!

If you’re willing to stock up before it warms up, you can save big, you know. Need some beach towels? How does a rainbow squares beach towel for two for just $3.19 plus $.99 shipping per item sound? (Argh, my linkbuilder is generating sloooooowly today. If that direct link isn’t working, go to the main Kohls page and search on “rainbow squares” to find it.) There’s tons of stuff on clearance at Kohls right now, but that towel jumped out at me. (Well, not literally… but… oh, you know what I mean.)

$.99 shipping per item ends today so get shopping if you want in on that, plus you can use coupon code GRCP5007 for an additional 15% off (not sure when that one expires). And here’s a general Kohls shopping tip: The discounted stuff goes fast. When they do the $.99 shipping per item, order what you want quickly—you can always go back and place another order (or two) if you want to browse for more items.

And then you can start dreaming about warmer days.

If your home needs decorating

I’ve ordered from Home Decorators Outlet twice, now, and both times I’ve been very pleasantly surprised with my purchases. Each time I thought “Eh, it’s cheap… it’ll do,” and then my item turned out to be, well, nice. I love it when that happens.

Anyway, they have all sorts of home stuff—furniture and rugs and the like—plenty cheap, already. But through February 15th, 2008, they’re also offering an automatic $20 off orders of $175+. That’ll probably cover the shipping, in most cases.

[They have an oak file cabinet there which I’m coveting, but not buying. Because although it would look awesome in my imaginary library, under the circumstances I can probably make do with an imaginary file cabinet….]

For the ultimate Family Guy fan

How could you not be intrigued by something called the Freakin’ Party Pack? Hey, where are you going…?

Okay, I’ll confess: Family Guy is one of my guilty pleasures. It’s awful. Awful and wrong. I know. But it makes me laugh.

Right now Amazon is offering the Family Guy Freakin’ Party Pack for $74.99 (half off). It includes 17 (!!) Family Guy DVDs, a complete ping-pong set-up (minus the table, of course), and poker chips and playing cards.

Okay, I’ll say it: Just add beer.

The Tax Man cometh

If you’re a State Farm customer, and you’re registered on their online site, you have access to TurboTax and both federal and state e-filing absolutely free. The link to access TurboTax for free will appear in your sidebar on their page when you are logged in.

You’re a customer, but not registered online? Go register.

Not a customer, but wishing you were? State Farm offers a variety of banking options, too. You could open a savings account or a CD, after which you’d have access to the free TurboTax and filing.

They offer this every year, by the way. Why? Who knows. Good karma? Nah. Probably just for the site traffic. Still, a deal’s a deal.

It’s educational!

I love it when they have the Annual Overstock Saleicon over at ShopPBS. How can you argue with discounted DVDs (and stuff) of history and award-winning children’s programming? Exactly.

(Psssst. If Santa likes to slip DVDs into the stockings, I know it feels impossibly early, but this is a good time to buy for next year.)

The sale is on through January 31st, 2008. Did I mention that DVDs are small and flat an easy to store?

Maybe I should give it its own category

Hey, guess what! It’s time for another Restaurant.com coupon. HOW UNUSUAL!

Through January 13th, 2008, take 50% off your dining certificate order with coupon code SAVINGS. That’s $25 of someone else sweating in the kitchen and doing the dishes for just $5. Now you can totally afford a babysitter, and there’s really no need to mention to your husband that these discounts come out every week or so. Let him believe you dug up a great deal just because you’re brilliant.

Keep your laptop cool

If you missed this deal the last time it came around, you’re in luck! It’s back and even cheaper.

Need a laptop cooler? This dual-fan Antec USB-powered laptop cooler is currently $27.99 at Buy.com, with an available $20 rebate. (Offer valid through January 13th, 2008.)

I did pick this one up back in September, and have been using it happily ever since. The rebate came quickly, too.

(My brother-in-law contends that the cooler “chewed up” the battery in his Dell laptop, though he also said that Dell replaced the battery for free as that would be considered a defect. I told him the solution was to buy a Mac. He didn’t seem to think that was all that funny. Huh.)

Mindful Money: Saving is as important as breathing

Most Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and when you start talking about saving money they get that deer-in-the-headlights stare going on. “I can’t possibly put any money in the bank,” they say. “I’m barely making ends meet as it is.”

If it’s that difficult to make your ends meet, it’s time to start considering different ends.

How you plan your spending and reduce your expenditures is a whole ‘nother topic, of course, and one that deserves its own post (and may get one, at some point, but not right now). What I want to talk about right now is the money that’s going into your savings account on a regular basis. If you don’t have a regular savings plan, you need one. If you think you can’t afford one, you really need one.

Here’s the thing: Don’t tell me you can’t possible afford to save any money if you have a place to live and any income and a means to get to a computer and read this site. If you’re here, you can afford it. Period. read more…
