Great books and gifts

Have you been to the sale section at National Geograhic lately? There’s all sort of neat stuff on sale, but the book section is where you’ll find the biggest bang for your buck. National Geographic books are always amazingly well done—gorgeous pictures, heavy binding, etc.—and make impressive-looking gifts. (Got a little Star Wars fan in the house? Check out the Star Wars book!)

There’s ornaments and some other things on sale as well. I just sort of fell into the book section, as I am wont to do.

Sweeten the deals: Use coupon code 07BB02 for free shipping through the end of the year. Because after all that Amazon shopping, you can’t possibly be expected to pay for your own shipping.

Second only to “The Princess Bride”

This is my second-favorite movie in the world, and it’s definitely the season and all of that. I mean, who doesn’t want the special edition two-disc DVD set of “A Christmas Story” in their stocking? Communists, that’s who.

It’s marked down to $9.99, making it affordable as well as just plain awesome.

Sadly, what I’m about to recommend is not on sale, but if you’re giving it as a gift, how cool would it be paired with one of these? (Answer: Totally fantastic.)

I’m about to go to bed, I swear

Man, I’m tired. A hard day of scoping out the Amazon sales has taken its toll.

But still, I soldier onward! Plowing through out of love for mankind and a good deal!

So here’s tonight’s installment, and after this I’m turning in.

Two great tastes that go great today? Dinosaurs and building sets, of course. Check out these discounted Magna-Saurs. Very cool.

Would you rather build a vehicle than a dinosaur? That’s fine; check out the Probuilder sets.

Arrrrrr! Pirates! Er, Pyrates!

Yowza, look at all the marked down Plug and Plays. I know that everyone (except us) has video game consoles at home already, anyway, but maybe these would be good for long car trips?

We looooove Melissa & Doug, particularly when it’s up to 70% off. (Oh, how evil it would be to get the kids one of these and tell them they’re finally getting that puppy they keep asking for.)

One more

(Who am I kidding. Each of my “one more”s ends up being twelve more. I know, I know. Regardless.)

Select Play Along Club dolls and gear are marked down to between 60% – 75% off right now at Amazon.

If you haven’t seen these dolls, they are a really nice, age appropriate and affordable alternative to expensive dolls (like those that rhyme with shamerican pearl), suitable for younger kids. The original price is very reasonable, and the sale price is insanely good. (These would be really nice donation toys for Toys For Tots and the like, too.)

The name is Bond. James Bond.

Well, not my name. I have been busy dealing with plumbers and realtors and ripping my hair out today, my pretties, and I have been neglecting you. I’m sorry!

Know what I’d like to do? I’d like to curl up on the couch with something chocolate and watch every last James Bond movie until all of my problems resolve themselves. Ahhhhhhh.

Okay, that’s probably not going to happen. But you can still get a good deal on the movies, at least.

Games, games, games

Why yes, this is another post of Amazon deals. (Man. How do they keep dropping the prices? They’re killing me!)

Anyway, here’s some cheap games I’ve spotted this morning:

These hand-held games are probably worth what you’ll pay for them (not much), but they might be fun for a bit.

Got a Transformers fan? Check out Transformers Chess (60% off) or Transformers Risk (70% off), or Transformers Robot Fighters (70% off).

How about the Simpsons? Get Simpsons Game of Life (75% off), Clue (70% off), or Sorry (75% off).

Yahtzee! More specifically, Yahtzee Folio or Yahtzee Turbo (both 70% off).

Must… control… twitching… fingers….

A little gift for me

Something folks often ask me is whether I routinely go to the sorts of “bargain extremes” which I post about here in my everyday life. And the answer, of course, is yes. (It’s a sickness. And I’m okay with that.)

Last night I bought myself a pair of shoes. Remember the Piperlime deal where any purchase got a $20 gift code? I’d bought a $10 gift card. And last night I used my $30 towards a $60 pair of shoes that was marked down to $46. Pretty good, right?

… except then, I pricematched those shoes to the listing at Amazon, where they’re currently only $32. After pricematch, I spent around $3 for them yesterday. Even factoring in my original $10, I still got my $60 shoes for $13. Now, this took time and Piperlime’s pricematching system has nothing on the ease of using Zappos, but I’m willing to do that for the savings, because I am ill. Heh.

Please vote for Want Not in the 2008 Bloggers Choice Awards! And speaking of my illness, I thought now would be a good time to thank you all again for giving Want Not a second-place finish in the Blogger’s Choice Awards for 2007, and mention that voting for 2008 is now open, so if you are so moved, maybe we can lock up first place this time. In our fabulous, cheap shoes, natch.

In case you need a cover for your new duvet

On the heels of yesterday’s conversation about buying a down or down-alternative comforter and then covering it, I thought I’d point out that today there’s a whole bunch of flannel duvet covers marked down to $9.99 at Amazon.

I looooove flannel for the winter. Of course, “winter” is a relative term. It hit 80 degrees here yesterday. What is wrong with this state? (“Come to Georgia for the peaches, stay for the global warming!”)
