How not to go broke or kill the kids on a plane
Good morning! I’ll confess to taking an advice query out of order, today, because I found a relevant deal and so feel the need to answer right now. Those of you waiting on answers—fret not, my darlings. All things shall be answered in good time, I promise.
The very pretty Danielle writes:
Mrs. WISE WISE MIR! I need your help.
We are planning to go to Disney World with our 3 year old girl. There will be another family with us who has a 3 year old girl and some older boys. The plane ride will be a long one, about 8 hours or so. I was going to buy some of those great puzzles for the trip but is there anything else I can bring to keep her busy on the plane ride. A few things that won’t cut into our vacation funding too much?
Thanks Danielle
PS any good ideas on planning a trip to Disney World. We are just getting these plans together.
Let me start out by addressing the last bit first; I know nothing about travelling to Disney, but my excrutiatingly pretty friend Chris wrote an entire series on just this topic, and she has seven children and is my hero. Read her suggestions here, here, here and here.
Now. Let’s talk about the plane ride. read more…
Zim Zam, so cute and so cheap
I’ve never heard of this brand before today, but I am completely smitten. Also, sad: it’s really suited to toddlers, and so I can’t come up with a good excuse to buy any of it.
FAO Schwarz has all of their Zim Zam buildable furniture on sale, and shipping for up to $50 is only $5.50, so you could (potentially) outfit an entire room for very little money indeed.
They should make this stuff in adult sizes. I want my own modular shelving in a fruit motif, darnit!
Free shipping and big deals at Avon
Okay, apparently I’m living in an alternate dimension today (“Hi! Here’s an Entertainment Book deal which only I can see!”), but let’s try this deal, instead:
Get free shipping at Avon with coupon code CDFSW3. There are a number of good markdowns (check the “specials” subcategory after clicking on any master category), such as this 3-in-1 eyelash curler or this snowman recording ornament.
All of the Pore-Fection products are on a buy one, get one for a dollar special right now, too.
Now don’t go telling me this deal is one you can’t see, either, because if you do I’m going to develop a complex.
Do you do the Entertainment Book?
I’ve briefly mentioned Entertainment Books here before. For the unfamiliar, this is a book of coupons specific to your area (though some of the coupons are national, such as car rentals or hotel discounts) with a huge variety of savings. Is it worth it? Well, that depends. It depends on your area (does the book for your area feature places you patronize?) and how often you use the services listed (e.g., there are a lot of restaurant coupons; do you eat out?). I can’t tell you if the Entertainment Book is right for you. But it’s worth checking out.
And if you check it out right now, you’ll see that purchase of a 2007 book currently comes with a $25 restaurant gift certificate and $1 shipping. The cost of the books varies by area, but ranges from $25-$45. I’d say that if you’re buying a $25 book this is a great deal, and if you’re buying a $45 book, still a pretty good deal.
Entertainment Books make great gifts for hard-to-buy-for relatives who like to pinch pennies, by the way. Just sayin’.
48 hours of bargains

Far be it from Amazon to allow a holiday to pass without a big sale. This 48-hour thing looks a lot like the Friday sale, but who knows. Go poke around and see if there’s anything you can’t live without. Lots of sheets and Roombas and vacuums and, well, stuff. (I especially like the doggie Halloween costumes, special for people who want their dogs to hate them.)
Great deal on wooden puzzles
I was afraid that once Toys ‘R’ Us split from Amazon, that would be the end of the fabulous toy deals, but I guess I was worried for nothing….
Right now, most of the Melissa and Doug wooden puzzles at TRU are buy 2, get 1 free. Plus, if you buy more than $15 worth, you get another puzzle (it’s actually a 2-puzzle bundle pack) for free (automatically added to cart).
To make it even better, it looks like all of the qualifying puzzles currently have free shipping. So pick some of the $9.99 puzzles, and end up with 5 puzzles for $19.98 shipped.
These make awesome chew toys, er, gifts for toddlers.
Tis the season for Kleenex
And, uh, toilet paper. And Kotex.
Through October 31st, 2006, you can use coupon code SAVE20KC to instantly take $20 off your $79+ order of qualifying Kimberly-Clark products at Amazon.
So stock up on Kleenex, or Cottonelle, or… uh… other stuff. You don’t have to tell me what. In fact, please don’t. Thanks.
Save on books
Take 20% off at the Scholastic Store all weekend long (through October 9th) with coupon code SECRET.
Thanks, Stephanie!
Where, now?
I have it on good authority that these are actually really good pens. Seriously.
If only I could stop snickering.
Friday Sale, gimme some skin! Er, some flannel!
Hooray for the end of the week! I don’t know about you, but ’round here, the leaves are turning, the temperature is dipping, and I just want to be alone with a big mug of hot chocolate. Is that so wrong?
(My kids say: Yes, it is. Get off your butt and tend to us, woman.) (Hmph!)
Anyway. Where was I? Oh! Right! The Amazon Friday Sale is on once again, and guess what I just scooped up? A cozy set of king-sized flannel sheets for $15.99! Heck, you usually can’t buy twin sheets for that. There are lots of sizes and styles from which to choose. (Yes, the sheets are for my new bed. No, I don’t actually have the new bed yet. Hush.)
Of course, if quality percale sheets are your slumber drug of choice, check out the featured 800 thread count sheets which are 65% off.
For those of you who haven’t yet joined me in my new cult, the Cult of Robot, there are three different
Roombas
offered this week (you can use coupon code OCTSAVER for an additional $25 off either of the more expensive ones). These are refurbished machines, but iRobot’s customer service is excellent so buy with confidence. (My refurbished Roomba was broken, and iRobot replaced it with a brand new one. I pink puffy heart them.)
Of course, if you prefer the big honkin’ Cadillac of vacuums, you might want to check out the reconditioned Dyson Animal.
Have a little guy who’s ready for his first big-boy bike?
As always, click through the categories along the top of the Friday Sale page to see all of the deals, for there are many.
I’m going to go make some cocoa and think about my new flannel sheets….
