When two great tastes don’t taste great together

I must confess, I just do not understand this particular phenomenon. Someone woke up one day and said, “That’s it! I simply must make oversized, sentient M&Ms into characters from Star Wars!”

It’s completely shocking that this fabulous idea ended up on clearance, of course.

But, um, if you require candy-coated chocolate Star Wars personalities, this is the deal for you, I guess.

Trials and tribulations of lunch: Part Two

The lovely Melissa provided the fodder for this second part of our riveting lunch-related series:

Mir— Thank you for you wonderful blog— I always look forward to checking in and saving some money! Now that school is back in I have a question for you…. I have two kids attending elementary school this year and they want to get school lunch. School lunch is $1.50 per kid coming out to $7.50 a week and with the two of them $60 a month. This makes me sigh and wonder why they have to eat so often! 🙂 I feel like our schools do a pretty good job with lunch and my kids eat it really well. Their sandwiches usually come back home not touched— so I worry that they are hungry all afternoon.

So is it worth it to fork over for school lunch or should we stick with the lunch boxes? What do you think? Thanks!

This is one of those eternal questions, right up there with do you believe in life after death. Bag it or buy it? read more…

Plus-size savings

Catherine’s is at it again: use coupon code 776789406 through September 9th, 2006 for $15 off of your order of $15.01 or more. Shipping starts at just $4.95.

Not a plus size? They carry jewelry and other accessories, as well. Just sayin’.

Trials and tribulations of lunch: Part One

I received two questions about kids and school lunches, this past week, so I’m going to try to answer them in a somewhat timely manner as it appears that school has actually, you know, started for most of us.

First we have this desperate plea from Pieces:

Dear Mir,

Did you know that you are even pretty over my bloglines account? Just thought you might want to know.

My question for you is a little late in the season but I’ve backed myself into a difficult position. My kids start school tomorrow. And while I have successfully purchased the seventy bazillion dollars worth of school supplies, I just realized I forgot to buy lunch boxes. Gasp! I promised the kiddos new ones–ones that were big enough to actually hold a lunch and wouldn’t smash down into an envelope-sized container. I know that I have missed the boat when it comes to shopping in the stores. All that is left is tiny-Batman-smooshy lunch totes. Unacceptable for my junior higher. So I plan on shopping online. I have no idea where to start.

Do you have any advice? Wisdom? Miracles? They are going with brown paper bags tomorrow. It will be a sad day in the Pieces’ household.

Brown paper bags? Oh, the horror! read more…

Cheap Armani for the big guys

Yeah, I know there isn’t a picture. But it’s Armani! A black, 3-button, pinstripe suit! (Actually, okay; according to the product text, it’s a “threee button” suit. Three buttons deserve three Es, apparently.)

How bad could it be? For $78.89 (95% off!) and free shipping, I’d take the chance. Available in sizes 46 to 54. Got a big guy? He deserves Armani. Heck, at this price, everyone deserves Armani.

I don’t expect this deal to last long, so hop on it if you’re interested.

Peel me, baby

Every now and then I manage—either through some freebies I procure, or the kindness of friends who give me lovely gifts—to become completely addicted to products which are far too expensive for me to buy on a regular basis. Woe is me. Rather, woe is my spoiled, greedy self. Ha.

I have yet to find the philosophy product that doesn’t make my eyelashes flutter while I sing a little song of joy. Recently I received yet another wonderful philosophy product and it’s killing me, how good this stuff is, and how I do not want to be spending my money on it.

Well, drugstore.com does a regular philosophy freebie where if you order a given amount, you can get something for free. That’s all fine and dandy, but sometimes the freebie is something I can easily talk myself out of. But right now the deal is a free microdelivery peel kit (worth $30) with a $50 purchase. That’s… tempting. Very tempting.

Why, I could get fancy lip balms (mimosa? yes please!) for my friends for Christmas and keep the peel set, even. Hmmmmm.

Intro to kitchens on the cheap

Linens and Things has marked Kitchen 101 sets down from $29.99 to $9.99. If you have a local L&T, you can have your order shipped to the store for free and then pick it up.

Sweeten the deal? Use coupon code 989130181066 for 20% off or coupon code FS09 for free shipping on orders over $25. (You cannot stack codes; try them both to see which one gives you the bigger discount.)

Any one of these sets would be suitable for a wedding gift or a housewarming gift or a gosh I deserve something new for the kitchen because I’ve been saving so much money shopping through Want Not gift.

Celebrate labor with cheap clearance

Yeah, I know that didn’t make any sense.

Right now the clearance at Kohl’s is up to 70% off! Although you can certainly shop them online, I can tell you that some perserverance at the actual stores may pay off. It requires a lot of stamina and patience, though.

If you just want to check around online, use coupon code FALLMVC for an additional 15% off your order (expires September 13th, 2006). Free shipping on orders of $75 or more.

Although, if you’re anything like me, you’re completely stuffed full of barbecue and the thought of trying on clothes right now is so disturbing you can only be soothed with another piece of pie.
