Another DS deal
Amazon’s begun their “Countdown to Black Friday,” which may have made me squeal just a little bit. (Black! Friday! Eeeeeee!) Today’s video game deal is buy a DS Lite and get Guitar Hero on Tour for $10. (It looks like they have all colors in stock, too.) That’s the console and the game for $140, which is either the game for $10 (as they’re promoting it), or—if you’re like me, and like to make it feel like the best deal possible—like getting the game for regular price, and getting your DS Lite for $90!
Either way, it’s a great deal for that tween or teen who has been assuring you that they’re the last child on earth who doesn’t have a DS.
Edited to add: They’re also offering MySims Kingdom for just $19.99 today only (great reviews!).
Wook at da widdle picture fwame!
Ordinarily I am going to err on the side of quality over bargain; it’s not a bargain if it doesn’t work, obviously. And that’s why I usually suggest folks spend a little more on something like a digital picture frame, because that’s the sort of thing worth doing right. You want something with a great-quality display that’s easy to use, etc.
On the other hand, sometimes a bargain is so good I can’t quite resist. So you might want to check out this Nextar 3.5″ digital picture frame at Buy.com, currently just $22.99 shipped.
Is it the best and the brightest? Of course not. Is it an easy way to look like a big spender for not much money? Maybe! It might be worth checking out, at that price. I’m just sayin’.
One day only, sort of
I truly cannot decide which store is the most annoying with their supposed “one day sale,” but despite the fact that Macy’s ranks high on my list… well, they’re having another One Day Sale and darned if there aren’t a lot of really awesome deals to be had. Especially if you need some fancy duds for the family, this holiday season.
Needless to say, this “one day” sale is only for today. Oh, and tomorrow. Of course.
Please pay no attention to my head exploding.
Kohls savings for everyone
I don’t know if it’s holiday preparation or the dawning of a new era (either way, it’s great), but for the second time this month, Kohls is offering a coupon code that works for everyone (not just card holders). Today and tomorrow (through November 19th, 2008), anyone can use coupon code HOLIDAY20 to take 20% off your $100+ order.
Right now shipping is free on orders of $75+, automatically. And Kohls card holders can use code MVC5292 for free shipping on any size order, and code NOV15PICK for 15% off for those smaller orders that won’t qualify for the 20% off code.
I love Kohls for clothes and home goods, but they also carry quite a large assortment of toys. Between the current sales an the codes available, you might be able to pick up one of those “gotta have” items for which your child is begging on the cheap.
I think my calendar is broken
My calendar must be broken, because the 80% off codes for Restaurant.com are always offered only at the end of the month, and I think that today is only the 18th, yet you can use code SURPRISE to take 80% off right now, which means $25 of dining for just $2, which means that my calendar must be broken, right?
Man. I’m going back to bed.
This one is more of a karmic deal
Forewarning: This is not a “save a hundred dollars and only spend a couple of bucks” kind of deal. This is a “Spend some money but do good and get something cool” kind of deal.
By now you’ve probably heard about the One Laptop per Child Foundation, where your purchase of a specialty (low-power, rugged, child-geared) laptop also gets a second laptop donated to a child in a third-world country.
It’s a wonderful mission, and this year they’re selling them through Amazon. This isn’t the right thing for everyone—the XO laptops are severely limited in capability, compared to a conventional laptop—but the program is an admirable one and the laptops are getting great reviews for durability and basic functionality.
Worth checking out, if you haven’t already.
Peace of mind, mounted on the dash
You know how I am about my GPS unit. I love it and hug it and squeeze it and call it George. At the very least, I’ve happily said goodbye to the days in which I missed doctors’ appointments and other things because I became horribly lost along the way. It’s no fun, being directionally challenged.
And now I tend to highlight every GPS deal I see, because until I had one, I had no idea that it was possible to live life without getting lost. And now that I know, I want to spread the good news.
Today at Buy.com, get the TomTom ONE XL for just $99.99 shipped! It’s a refurbished model, and it doesn’t have text-to-speech (which means it says “Turn right” rather than “Turn right on Oak Street”), but for under a hundred bucks it’s about as good as you’ll do. (Heh—I was about to post this and saw that Amazon has matched the price, in case you’d prefer to buy it there.)
Or maybe you get where you’re going without a GPS just fine. In which case, congratulations! But you know, for the rest of us—viva la GPS!
Testosterone toys
It looks like the toy markdowns are starting at Amazon. Woohoo!
Here’s a couple that caught my eye just now….
For the little boys, how about a tool chest set just like Dad’s? It doesn’t come with a ton of tools, but it’d be great for storing ones you already have (or starting a collection). It’s half off and totally adorable for your tool-crazy tot.
And for the big boys, how about Scene It? Sports Powered by ESPN? It’s 70% off, and I recommend serving it with chips and beer.
Great; now I want potato chips….
If Lincoln Logs took steroids
Every child deserves love, food, shelter, and the ability to build a really big log cabin.
What?
I remember Lincoln Logs coming in a canister, and having just enough pieces to build one small cabin. But with this Yukon Express 700-piece building logs set you can go for the log skyscraper, or build the whole town. Either way, at just $19.99 (down from $50) and free shipping, I might alert Santa.
Read them in a box, read them with a fox
There’s no gift more classic than a Dr. Seuss book, and right now at Amazon you can buy 2 Dr. Seuss books and get 1 free.
I love them all, but I particularly recommend the Green Eggs and Ham Cookbook as a great gift for a smallish child (say, ages 4 to 10 or so). We just made dinner out of there—actually, my daughter made it—on Friday night. (We had Hoop-Soup-Snoop Group Potato Soup!)
