Quality kids’ shoes for back-to-school
You know I’m all about saving money on stuff for the kids—they outgrow it so quickly, it seems silly to “invest”—but there are some areas in which I just refuse to skimp. Shoes are one of those; I don’t cheap out on shoes, I just find good shoes for cheap. (There’s a difference. A few years of buying lower-quality shoes showed me the light.) (My caveat: I don’t care too much if their fancy shoes are less than perfect. There’s a big difference between sitting in church for an hour and running around in gym.)
So, with that in mind: Check out Olly for some of the hottest brands for kids. They carry everything from boutique brands like Lelli Kelly to Nike and Adidas. And then… through August 15th, you can use coupon code BTS25 for 25% off your order. It works on everything, even sale items.
And just like that, you’re getting those expensive shoes the kids want for a price you can stomach. Sweet.
Have an even cheaper hotel stay
Whoa, today’s Mamasource deal is $50 for a $100 gift card to Travelocity. If you’re planning a trip, Travelocity is a great way to get a deal, anyway, and then with the $100 card you got for half price, well, maybe you can afford to stay one of those places where they turn down the sheets and leave a chocolate on the pillow at night, all fancy-like.
Not that your entire hotel experience boils down to a piece of candy at bedtime, or anything. Just saying that I some people find that nice.
Better late than never, I guess
Sorry I forgot to post this earlier today—until midnight tonight, you can take 20% off everything at ShopPBS with coupon code SUM20. Combine that with some of the items already on sale, and you could score some great deals on educational favorites.
Okay, not everything from PBS is strictly educational. But I feel more virtuous when I think of it that way.
Straight and shiny hair at home
Been looking for a 1″ salon-quality straightening iron? Check out this deal on a HSI ceramic tourmaline ionic straightener at Amazon—it’s currently just $44.23 shipped.
I think the original price listed is probably inflated, but this is still a good 50%-75% off the regular price, and it has great reviews.
Speaking as a reluctant curly girl, myself, I have to say that a really good flat iron is akin to a miracle made into shiny, shiny hair. Heh.
You say goodbye, I say hello
Ooooh… they’re having the “Goodbye Summer, Hello Sale” event today at Rue La La. Tons of awesome sale items, and plenty of ’em will wear well into fall (it’s not all bikinis and sundresses, in other words).
Of course, I always get a little chuckle at some of their prices. I mean, I’m happy for the designer stuff that’s down in the $20-$60 range, but occasionally I click over five minutes after a boutique launches to discover that all of the $400 offerings are already sold out. Really? Methinks that most people who have that kind of money don’t really need Rue La La, know what I mean?
But hey, whatever. That just leaves more cheap stuff for me.
Half off at JCP.com
If you’ve still got some back-to-school shopping to do, check out today’s Plum Deal at Plum District—they’ve got a $50 voucher you can use at JCPenney.com for just $25. [Edited to add: Wait! Use coupon code summer to take off an additional $5, making it just $20!]
Do note that this voucher cannot be used in the store. But you’re so smart and pretty, you’d rather shop from home and avoid the crowds, anyway.
Personally, I’d also rather order clothes for my kids than drag them to the store, listen to them complain, and then have them pick out the one item that isn’t already on sale, too. But maybe that’s just me.
Take the girls over to Aerie today
Guess what’s happening over at Aerie right now! All of their bras are 40% off, automatically, plus they ship for free.
They have a wide selection, and one of the things I appreciate about them is that amongst the rows and rows of push-up bras (ahem) there are tons of teen-friendly styles in smaller sizes. It’s one of the few places you can go and find a huge assortment of choices that come in a 32 band.
(We will not be discussing whether or not I, myself, have to bra shop in the teen section. This isn’t that kind of blog.)
I’m stalking school supplies at Amazon
Amazon is doing something very interesting, right now: They’re taking small back-to-school items and marking them waaaaay down, one at a time, for a limited time. A few days ago it was glue sticks (I shared that one on the Facebook page), and today it’s a 3-pack of pink pearl erasers for just $.50.
Every time I see one of these, I grab it. Unfortunately, it’s limited to one per account, but for $.50 and free Prime shipping, I can’t really fault them for that. The real lesson here, though, is to keep your eye on this stuff. They seem to be popping up a new school supply deal every few days.
Replace all your phones at once
The current Lightning Deal at Amazon is a 4-pack of Panasonic DECT 6.0 cordless phones, plus an answering system.
After years of buying crummy cordless phones, I finally ponied up for a multi-handset system a few years ago, and I haven’t looked back, since. This Panasonic set is highly rated, and a great deal at $85 for the whole thing.
Of course, if you enjoy shouting, “Can you hear me now?” at callers, skip this one.
The Want Not Review: Skillet Bacon Jam
You knew it had to happen eventually, right? Me and bacon; bacon and me. We’re pals. Good friends. Total BFFs, in fact. So when I hear about Skillet Bacon Jam sometime last year, I knew I had to try it out, eventually.
The opportunity finally presented itself when I received a sample in the mail last week. Not that I wouldn’t have paid for the privilege, myself, but I figured bacon jam could be a dangerous item for me to have on hand, much as I try to avoid buying gluten-free cookies because then, duh, I will eat them. But my tiny sample container was perfect.
What is bacon jam? Well, it’s mostly bacon, of course. It’s been cooked down with onions and spices and possibly fairy dust. The resulting concoction is visually unappealing (think brown and sludgy), but the taste more than makes up for its lackluster appearance. It’s a sweet bacony explosion of flavor. Apparently it was formulated to top burgers at the Skillet Diner—and I’m sure that would be incredible—but right now my very favorite thing is to eat it on turkey breast. A little dab of bacon jam and I don’t miss mayo or cheese one bit, so I figure it evens out, calorie-wise.
It’s also incredible on eggs, if you don’t have any bacon handy (or, again, want to skip the full caloric onslaught of having a slab of bacon). Okay, fine; I haven’t tried it on anything yet that didn’t taste good. I would probably like it on cupcakes.
If you love bacon, I think you’ll love bacon jam. Yum.
I received the product mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.
