The best deals, minus the crowds

Every now and then my husband drags me in to our local Best Buy. They have great deals, but also always seem to be filled with people who have important technical questions for the staff such as “Which one is the any key?” (Okay, maybe that’s just my local store. But seriously, sometimes I think I can feel my IQ dropping the moment I step in there.)

Thankfully, you can get all the same great deals without ever leaving your house (hooray). Why, today you can still take advantage of their weekend back-to-school deals, which include things like free shipping on all netbooks (some of which are already reduced). It’s a great way to get the cool stuff you want without fighting the crowds.

The early bird gets the toy deals

My children are fast approaching the age where I will no longer have to have a gift closet full of appropriate offerings for birthday parties. No, someday soon, all I’ll have to have available will be a stack of gift cards and my fervent promises to act like we don’t know each other, I guess. But I’m going to enjoy these last days of little-kid-dom while I can.

So pardon me while I swoon a bit over the excellent offerings in today’s one-day toy sale at Amazon, because there’s plenty here to sock away either for birthday parties or the holidays or whatever.

I mean, check out this Erector fire truck set for just $12 (69% off). Or this 18,000-piece puzzle (that’s not a typo!) for $75 (half off). True, I wouldn’t give that one away, but think of how many hours of not whining “I’m bored” entertainment and fine-motor/critical-thinking exercise that would give!

I just need to find a month or two when we don’t need to use our dining room table, I think….

Don’t forget those renewals

Have a magazine subscription or two you’re thinking of letting lapse because you don’t really need it and the price is exorbitant? Don’t forget that Amazon sells magazine subscriptions, many of them for under $10. This is my favorite way to keep subscriptions going, because it’s so darn cheap.

For the best bang for your buck, check out their selection of two years for the price of one selections.

Know who love getting magazines? Kids! And at these prices, why not?

Saturday deals

Gooooood morning! We survived the first week of school. I think that means we deserve medals, but the kids seem to think pancakes will do. Hmph. In the meantime, let’s see what’s on tap for today….

Do you have a Gap, Old Navy, or Banana Republic charge card? Today (August 14th, 2010) only, shop Gap with your card and you can use code GAPMAGIC20 and take 40% off your entire purchase (adult items only; won’t work on kids/baby). Then tomorrow through the 22nd, that code will work for 20% off. But obviously if you can shop today, that’ll get you the greatest savings.

There’s tons of deals this weekend at 6pm.com, including more clothing than ever, and free shipping on $100+ goes through Sunday night.

As I type this, there’s a $90 Lightning Deal on a Garmin Nuvi in the Amazon Gold Box—that’s a great deal if you’re hoping to snag one of those. (Also at Amazon: Been dreaming of bread? Check out this Breadman TR520 bread machine for $50 shipped.)

I really cannot tell you what’s available in the Target Daily Deals because once I saw the adorable wee sock monkey infant costume my brain stopped working. (Sock monkey! The cute!!) Don’t forget code TOEY738U for an extra 10% off.

Kristine sent along this link to LL Bean to get free shipping on any order (thanks, Kristine!), plus backpacks are currently 20% off and many items come with free monogramming right now.

That should keep you busy for a bit… I have to go see about those pancakes….

Friday, I think we all survived

One week of school down, 40-something to go. At least we got the first stomach bug out of the way (yes, that’s all I’m going to say about that). Yeah. Um. It’s been quite a week. Let me see what we have in the way of a bit of retail balm for my soul….

It’s Friends & Family weekend at Aeropostale (and their kids’ clothing site, P.S.)! Shop online with coupon code FFAUG or click through to print out a coupon and hit the actual store. I don’t know if they sew cocaine directly into the denim or what, but my daughter will now wear nothing else, Mom, because the Bayla skinny jeans are the only acceptable jeans in the universe now.

The Amazon Friday Sale is still full of K-cups (does anyone else get the feeling there’s an entire Amazon warehouse dedicated to their glut of K-cups? I bet it smells great in there), but there are a few other notables, as well. For example, if I were a nicer mother I might pick up this box of Spree tubes, because they’re half price and everyone knows that Sprees are far superior to Sweet-Tarts. (Plus, at around $.50/apiece, it’s a heckuva a lot cheaper than buying ’em at the movie theater.) And these cocoa roast almonds are not only just about $17 when you buy via Subscribe & Save—a great price for four big containers!—they’re a heart-healthy snack with just a hint of chocolate to curb those cravings. Yum. Also: The Amazon Gold Box holds an HD Roku today, for 20% off! Worth taking a look if you’ve been considering one. Don’t make me tell you how much I adore our Roku, again.

The Target Daily Deals are all over the place today. It feels like it should be a party game—what can you do with a throw blanket, a toaster, a Star Wars comforter, some hangers, and a cookware set? (Please don’t answer that….) Coupon code TOEY738U should still be working for an additional 10% off, too.

I’m loving 6pm.com today; they’ve got discounts on Life Is Good, Patagonia, Adidas, Keen, and more! And don’t forget that through the weekend, orders of $100+ ship for free.

I’m off to sip some tea and nibble some toast. This week’s contest winner will be coming up later, once I no longer feel like I was run over by a truck.

More just-for-today savings

I love all of these “just for today” sales. Are they supposed to create a sense of urgency? Convince you that if you don’t buy-buy-buy on August 12th, you’ve missed your chance? (It’s possible I just don’t understand how retail management works, I guess. But these are the things that keep me awake at night. What if you were sick today? Or you’re getting paid tomorrow? What then?)

Anyway, just in case you care: Today there are two different ways to save at Piperlime: first, save 20% on all denim with code LOVEJEANS; and second, save 20% on all Fall shoes with code STOCKUP.

Now, ordinarily I would continue scoffing at the one-day nature of it all, but here’s the thing: Piperlime doesn’t have all that many sales. But they do have free shipping and free returns. So if you felt compelled to shop today, it’s pretty much risk-free. At least there’s that.

(And no, I don’t know what happens if you try to buy Fall shoes and denim in the same order, with two coupon codes. Probably it causes a rift in the very fabric of the space-time continuum. I’d recommend going with two separate orders, just to be on the safe side.)

The not-so-secret sale

Apparently this week is the big “secret sale” at Kohls, but I think that maybe if it was supposed to be such a big secret, they wouldn’t have sent me three different emails and two different fliers about it. Just sayin’.

Anyway, shipping is automatically free on $75+, and coupon code BACK2SAVE will save you another 15% off the already-reduced sale prices you’ll find throughout the store. (I think that one only works for Kohls card holders.)

Looks to me like the clearance has been restocked, too, so you’re apt to find plenty worth the trip. And as always, I’d rather page through a bunch of screens than get run over by someone else’s screaming toddlers at the actual store….
