Instant international flair

Full disclosure: I’m not a fan of these, myself—I’d rather make an honest-to-goodness cup of coffee the old-fashioned way—but if you like the General Foods International instant coffee drinks, hightail it over to Amazon.

They’ve got multiple 6-packs of drink mixes marked down to just $12.50, which comes out to just $10.62 shipped when you buy via Subscribe & Save (about $1.75/tin).

Come to think of it… for that price, these might be worth buying just as Emergency Backup Caffeine. Hmmmm.

Seating on a budget

The very pretty Emily writes:

I know that you’ve addressed this before, but I was just wondering if you had any new advice. I am a teacher and a fairly recent grad, so I don’t have a ton of money. I’ve seen some really cute couches on Craigslist, and some ugly couches that would be cute with the right slipcover. What is your opinion on buying used “soft” furniture? Is it worth saving money by buying it used and/or having it slip covered?

This is one of those questions I feel the need to preface with a big ol’ “take it with a grain of salt,” because this is a prime example of personal opinion being more important than fact.

Fact: You can buy things like furniture a lot cheaper if you’re willing to get them used.
Opinion: Used things with unwashable cushions scare me a little. read more…

Decisions, decisions

Now that the drought seems to be over in Georgia, I’m thinking I need some cool rainboots. Like, say, the ones they have in today’s Target Daily Deals for just $18 shipped. But they have twelve different colors, and now I’m paralyzed by choice. Oh, the agony.

Try TOEY738U for another 10% off. But it doesn’t tell you which color to get; believe me, I tried to get it to tell me. Hmph.

Don’t mind if I do

Want to fall into some savings at Gap? (Am I the only one who remembers those “Fall into the Gap!” commercials? You know, the ones they used to show when dinosaurs still roamed the earth?) Today and tomorrow, coupon code GAPSAVENOW takes 25% off your entire purchase, and then on July 15th the coupon still works, but only takes 20% off. [Edited to add: I’m sorry, my error for not realizing it only works on non-sale items. Ack!]

Which pretty much means you should do your shopping today or tomorrow, obviously.

Hey, students! Free Prime!

I know we probably don’t have a ton of college students reading here, but for the few of you who are, your life is about to get a whole lot better.

Amazon is offering a free year of Prime to students. Really! You have to have a valid .edu address and be able to provide proof of enrollment. That’s it.

Clearly this is a hook to get you to buy your textbooks from them. But whatever; get your books, get your toothpaste, get whatever you need for an entire year, all with free 2-day shipping, or pay just $3.99 to get it overnight.

This is way better than a frat party.

Deck the halls, or your gift closet

The previous deal on DS games reminded me that it’s about this time of year when I start really thinking about holiday shopping. Yes, really! Who wants to shop with the rest of the world, after Thanksgiving? Not me. Summertime is always slow for retailers, and so it usually produces a nice crop of sales, which make for an ideal time to shop for the kids, stress-free.

Why, eToys is having their big summer sale, with savings of up to 75%, and free shipping on $69+. If you want to get a jump on your holiday shopping or just stock up for the next round of birthday parties, this would be an excellent way to do it.

Or you could just wait until the last minute and end up paying full price in desperation, I guess. But that sounds pretty unpleasant, to me.

Deals on DS games

I always forget that there’s weekly deals at Best Buy, but then sometimes I go check and am pleasantly surprised. Like today, for example—if you check out the Video Game Deals, you’ll see a link to Buy 1, get 1 Half Price Nintendo DS games. Free shipping on this deal, too.

Who couldn’t use a couple more games to keep the kids busy in the car during summer travel? Well, maybe you don’t need ’em. But I’ll happily take those nice, quiet Nintendo-fueled drives where I can get them, thanks.

Two sale tips

First: If you love Eddie Bauer, even though their Ultimate Summer Sale is “officially” over—and now morphed into generic “End of Season Savings”—they’ve just taken another round of markdowns, so it’s worth checking out.

Second: If you shopped the big sale in the last couple of weeks and see that something you bought is now cheaper, call them. Eddie Bauer is great about price adjustments. I bought a bunch of stuff for my husband a couple of weeks ago and everything is cheaper now, and when I called for a price adjustment they were just as nice as could be. So now, of course, I’m thinking about placing another order. (All part of their nefarious plan, no doubt!)

Shoe cool

I was half-heartedly clicking through today’s specials at 6pm.com when I finally hit the bottom of the page and saw the little box promoting women’s Skechers for $19.95 or less.

That little box, my friends, takes you to two entire pages of under-$20 styles, from sandals to sneakers to even those ugly, clunky boots that my daughter and her friends think are “so super cool.” So you can back-to-school shop or just pick up a pretty pair for yourself or maybe do both. Two birds, one stone, cool kicks, etc.
