Introducing Mindful Money: Allowance
Good morning! Might I just say that you are all looking ravishingly pretty today? Have you lost weight? You look marvelous.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to chime in on this post to let me know what you’re hoping to see here in the future. I love getting your feedback and I promise that I’m going to be addressing many of your requests/concerns in the coming weeks. One of the topics I saw come up several times, though, was one that I was planning to work on this month, anyway, so say hello to a new category here at Want Not: Mindful Money. There’s a lot of stuff that will go in here, over time, but I thought with a new year and all—and with so many of us being parents—I’d kick things off with a review of one of my favorite money topics: Giving kids allowance. read more…
Get organized, stay cool
Does the trunk of your car look like a bomb hit it? You may be wanting one of those handy car trunk organizer things, but are unwilling to pay a ton of money for it. Or, maybe you—like me—live somewhere warm enough that it’d be smart to tote around a small cooler just in case you decide to stop at the store for milk but still have to run a bunch more errands before you get back home.
Check out the trunk organizer or cooler from One Step Ahead. Yeah, they’re a baby/kid store, but this is just a bag for your trunk. No frou-frou involved, I promise. (Both items are listed there; scroll down to see the options.) Both have been marked down to just $3.95 from $14.95. Shipping starts at $5.75, but you can use coupon code JNRYBDAY to take 15% off your order and lessen the shipping sting, a little.
(P.S. Hi! I’m back! Will get to addressing all of your awesome suggestions and such later today.)
More cheap memory
Need a some SD memory on the cheap? How does $13.95 shipped for 2GB sound? That’s what I thought.
At least, that’s what my husband emailed me this morning as I sat 10 feet away from him in our office. Ah, romance!
A question for you, pretty ones
At long last we are headed back home. It’s not that we haven’t enjoyed the holiday travels, you understand, but there is something to be said for being in your own house, with your own bed. It’s time to get back to normal. Things will be quiet here today as we make our way back down the coast and home to Georgia.
Anyway. For the last couple of months, Want Not has focused heavily on sales and deals, particularly those on toys and electronics and other hot holiday gifts. That’s fine; I think together we found some great deals an made some holidays brighter, which is awesome.
On the other hand, I’ve always intended for Want Not to be about more than shopping. And while it’s natural that around Christmas it becomes primarily about finding good deals on gifts, now I’d like to get back to the original intention, here, which was/is managing money in a healthier way.
So I’d like you to tell me what you’re hoping to see here in the coming months. Are you just here for the deals? Do you enjoy the advice entries? (I do, by the way, but I haven’t gotten nearly as many questions lately.) Are there issues you want to see tackled here, various areas of interest I’ve not covered? This is your chance to tell me what to do. And I might even do it!
(I’ll be home tonight, and am looking forward to reading your responses. Play nice while I’m gone, please.)
Work out for less
Mind you, I am not advising you to buy this, necessarily, as I am the queen of well-meaning fitness DVDs which then only sit on the shelf because for some reason just buying them does not actually, you know, make you fit. I found that very disappointing.
But if you were already in the market for a home workout, and if you’re a fan of the show The Biggest Loser (which I am), you might be interested in the 5-DVD The Biggest Winner workout set which has just dropped to $7.49 (81% off!) at Amazon.
Just sayin’.
Ring in the new year with bars
Do you eat nutrition bars? Have you vowed to be healthier this year? You might want to check into this January Amazon grocery special: Buy any combination of select Clif, Luna, Odwalla, Powerbar and Larabar products, and take $10 off your $39+ total with coupon code JANBARS8.
Combine the coupon with products which are already marked down (I saw some Clif bars already 42% off) and you can make out with a great deal.
Ways to save on shipping
Good morning and happy new year! In 2008 I resolve to… ummmm… save more money. Also, to eat fewer cookies. (I like to pace myself.)
Did you know that many online retailers who also have brick and mortar stores offer ways for you to skip paying the shipping from online orders? I think I’ve mentioned before that if you place an online order at the store, Lane Bryant will wave the shipping fees. You can do the same at Eddie Bauer, and that will take care of that annoying handling charge they always tack on (and I think if you ship to the store, it takes care of the shipping as well). Just this morning I read that if you want something from Best Buy which is only offered online, you can go to the store and have an associate order it for you, and they’ll waive the shipping.
I still prefer just sitting at home in my pajamas, but it’s always good to know how to save a few more bucks.
If only all memory was this easy
Imagine if—as a busy mom—you could just pick up some extra memory for yourself, like a little something to plug in so that you not only manage to work a full day, get the kids’ homework checked and shuffle them to various activities, but you also remember to make dinner. Wouldn’t that be great? (I usually manage everything on that list but then get back home and realize I forgot to cook anything. Oops!)
Well, I don’t really know of a good way to expand that kind of memory, but I do know that right now at Buy.com you can pick up a 2-pack of 2GB thumb drives for $19.99 shipped. It won’t get dinner made, but they are pretty handy.
Save 70%, today only
Hey hey hey, it’s Restaurant.com time again! Today only, use coupon code COUNTDOWN to take 70% off your order. And as if $25 of dining for a grand total of $3 wasn’t enough, you’ll also receive a code for $15 off any order at deLaFlowers! (There was some confusion the last time there was a bonus code; the code will appear on your confirmation page in the lower right-hand corner within 24 hours of purchasing.)
I still need to use my $20 Dale & Thomas code from the last time I bought a certificate, but I sure did have fun topping off everyone’s stockings on Christmas Eve with bags of gourmet popcorn from my last great buy there….
Whaddaya know, another sale
Hey, I think today is a special day. Hrm. Let me think. Well, it was already Christmas. And I’m pretty sure it’s not Easter yet. Wait, I’ve almost got it…. Huh. No idea.
Okay, anyway, Macy’s is having another big sale in honor of whatever holiday it is that’s coming up. Just thought you might like to know.
(Yes, I’m still on the road. Yes, I’m getting a little punchy.)
