Think pink, DSi style

Been hoping for a deal on a Nintendo DS? I hope you have a girl (or an enlightened boy)—the pink Nintendo DSi is currently just $119 at Amazon.

I doubt they’ll last long, but this is a great deal if this is one of the items you’re hoping to scoop up on Friday. Knock it out today, leave yourself more time for shoe shopping later in the week. (I have priorities, clearly.)

Get your Harry Potter on

I was just lamenting at the dinner table last night that Target had had a deal on the Harry Potter movies and I’d opted not to buy it, right before realizing that we’ve missed several movies and we’re not ready to go see the latest one.

Then I checked the price at Amazon and… assured my kids we could probably just Netflix the missing movies. Because I’m cheap. (And probably mean. Don’t forget mean!)

And then this morning… voila! The Harry Potter Years 1-6 Giftset is the current Amazon Gold Box deal; it’s just $24 on DVD or $40 on Blu-ray. So I can get all 6 movies for about what it costs for our family to see a single film at the theatre. Total score.

Shhhhh, don’t tell them.

Flat children are funny

If you have kids, you’re probably already well-acquainted with Flat Stanley. On the one hand, you might think it’d be a drag to only be half an inch thick… but on the other, you fit lots of places and can mail yourself around for adventures and stuff. Hee.

Right now Amazon has the Flat Stanley Collection Box Set (4 books) for just $7.50. This would be a great gift either for a child you love or for donation—these are really fun books. And then you can make your own Flat Stanley and mail him around, too.

(Dropping a bulletin board on an actual child in an effort to flatten him, though, is not recommended.)

Save on the sale, today only

Got a quickie for you, and my apologies for not posting this sooner.

Today (November 22nd, 2010) only, shop sale items at Vera Bradley and you can take an additional 30% off the sale price with coupon code VBPOUNCE.

This brings most of the prices down from “well, on sale it doesn’t make me choke” firmly into the “hey, I would totally pay that” camp. Nice.

What time on Black Friday?

The very pretty Randi asks:

Genius saving-money guru lady, I have a question or two for you. First, I plan on spending Black Friday in my pajamas – but what time in the morning should I get up? If I remember correctly, some sites have deals REALLY early in the morning. Do you have any advice as to what time would be a good time to start surfing for deals? And secondly, do you believe that Black Friday will be better, or that Cyber Monday will be better?

This is one of the things I talked about in my Black Friday presentation at Save Up (that post now contains video of the presentation), but I’m happy to talk about it again, because this is important stuff.

The short answer: It depends.
The long answer: It depends on what you’re shopping for, and how badly you want something specific. Read on! read more…

The Blitz is back at 6pm

Do you remember how last year 6pm.com started doing one special item each day, around Black Friday? Oh, I know they have new specials every day, but this was one item that went live each day at a very special price.

Last year I got a Blu-ray player on the first day they did it. I remember a bunch of you got Flip deals, too.

Anyway, it’s back: Today’s the first day of their Holiday Blitz, and today’s special item is an assortment of North Face fleece jackets for 58% off. Now, they’re not exactly cheap, but if you (or your brand-conscious teen) simply must have one of those, it’s a heck of a deal over regular retail.

But I must say I’m looking forward to what goodies they may have in store for us later this week, too.

And speaking of Zhu Zhus…

… weren’t we talking hamsters? I think we were.

Right now Amazon has a Zhu Zhu Pet 3 Pack available for just $12.

It says Hamsters Will Vary, which strikes me as hilarious for some reason. It’s possible I’m a little sleep deprived and it’s not as funny as I think, but there you have it.

Clean carpets are priceless, right?

Just a quick disclaimer, particularly for the guys out there: A carpet cleaner is never a good holiday gift. Just in case you were wondering.

That said, with the hustle and bustle of the holidays and visitors, I don’t know about you, but for me this is always the time of year when I start thinking about buying a steam cleaner for my carpets. Just because if I think too hard about what all might be hanging around in there… ummm, yeah. Let’s not go there. But you see my point.

Amazon has this Hoover SteamVac available right now for $110 shipped, which is a good $25 cheaper than anywhere else. And with 4-and-a-half stars after over 1500 reviews, I’m thinking it’s a pretty safe bet in terms of quality.

So, to recap: Not a good holiday gift. But a nice deal if your carpets are looking a little grungy. You’re welcome.

Merry Monday from Gap and Old Navy!

Today is just getting better and better. No small feat for a Monday!

Today you can shop at Gap, Old Navy or Banana Republic and you’ll notice that visiting any one of these sites gives you a splash screen about “Merry Monday.” Here’s the catch—discount code amounts are being randomly assigned to visitors, from 25% to 40%. Maybe you don’t see the 40% one, which would be a shame. So here you go: Use coupon code MONDAY40A to take 40% off your entire order at any or all three of those stores, today (Monday, November 22nd, 2010) only. Shipping is automatically free on your $50+ order.

Pardon me, but I have to go do some shopping….

Black Friday Week begins at Amazon

Oh, it’s shaping up to be a really fun week. There’s a whole week of Lightning Deals for Black Friday going on at Amazon, with deals popping up every half hour or so, all day long. It’s like a Woot-Off on steroids, and clearly I am going to get absolutely nothing done this week. Heh.

Note: Amazon has changed the rules for Lightning Deals. You now have 15 minutes to check out with an item before it’s removed from your cart. This is good news for those of us who lamented buyers grabbing up items and ultimately never purchasing them, but bad news for those of us who are indecisive.

Also, don’t forget to check out the regular Gold Box and Lightning Deals—today they’ve got a Flip MinoHD for just $110, among other things.

Let the games begin!
