We love Lego

It’s not as though we need more Lego; ever since Christmas threw up at my house, I think it’s fair to say that we’re not exactly short on little plastic bricks. Ahem. Nonetheless, I do periodically bop on over to the Sales and Deals section at Lego and today I see that they’ve added a bunch of new items.

Now, my son would tell you that the actual building things are the story here, but personally? I’m a little bit smitten with these minifig cookie cutters or the minifig popsicle molds. I mean, come on.

If you’re throwing a Lego-themed birthday party, this is definitely the sale for you. Just sayin’.

Only a little bitter

Remember when you felt all smug if you found a highly-rated GPS unit with text-to-speech capability for under $200? No? That’s just me, then? Fine. But I still remember, and the fact that today’s Amazon Gold Box holds a Garmin Nuvi 285WT—which not only has the coveted text-to-speech capability, but MSN Direct Traffic, as well—for under a hundred bucks makes me think that you kids today have it too easy. Why, back in my day, you had to work for these deals! Hmph.

Now go get your ridiculously cheap GPS, and get off my lawn.

Saturday deals

Gooooood morning! Let me tell you right off that there’s a contest coming up later on that is nothing short of both nutritious and delicious. You don’t want to miss it, trust me.

I’ve had several readers ask lately what to get their fellas for Valentine’s Day, so I thought I’d offer up a few options.

Option 1 (Gadgets): This weekend the newly revamped Sharper Image site is offering $10 off $50+ with coupon code 10OFF50. Because you show me the guy who doesn’t like weird little gadgets, and I’ll show you… ummm… a freak of nature. Moving on!

Option 2 (Entertainment): It looks like there’s tons of Blu-rays for $10 or less at Amazon right now, so shop away. Nothing says love like “I got you that movie I hate because I know you love it. And with Blu-ray I can hate it in High Definition, even.”

Option 3 (Fitness): Among the great weekend deals at 6pm.com today is 60% or more off Reebok. Can you put a price on a fancy new pair of sneakers? Um, wait. I guess you can. But wouldn’t you rather put a lower price on it, and then act like you just loved him so darn much you went all out? There you go. Or if he’s a winter sports kind of guy, check out the Winter Clearance Sale at Altrec for gear.

Option 4 (Clothing): Maybe something new and spiffy to wear is the way to go. Let’s see; the Stock-Up Sale at Jos. A. Bank is going on right now—plenty of buy 2, get the second one some percentage off, buy 3, get the third one free types of deals on all kinds of clothes (both professional and casual). There’s a new free shipping code for Lands’ End out, too; just use code COMFORT with PIN 1144 through February 11th, 2010.

Option 5 (Zombies): You know I’m usually a die-hard Threadless fan (still am), but I’m having trouble ignoring the awesomeness of this zombie shirt from Tanga. Nothing says love like zombie battle.

That hopefully gives you a few ideas to check out. And, you know, zombies on the brain. Hee.

Hungry for Friday?

So, just in case you thought it was your imagination that the Amazon Friday Sale seems to be shrinking lately, go take a look. Today it’s only one category! Amazon, what the heck??

Look, I’m not saying there aren’t any deals to be had. But it’s kind of disappointing, nonetheless. Sure, they have Oskri bars for $13.60 shipped after Subscribe & Save, and that’s a great deal (plus I love me some Oskri), but I’m not sure that’s enough. And yes, fine, I’m actually running low on our beloved Designer Vanilla Whey (I don’t know if it’s “designer,” but I do know it doesn’t contain the artificial sweeteners and chemicals most other whey does) and two pounds of it for $17 is a great price, but still. And I suppose that a 24-bar variety pack of Clif Kid Zbars for $9.34 shipped after Subscribe & Save is pretty good, too. But still. These things do not a Friday Sale make, Amazon.

No. No. Don’t try to make it up to me with February’s 100 MP3 albums for just $5 each, Amazon. You’ve crossed the line this time.

Check out today’s Target Daily Deals, instead, maybe. They’ve got a glider and ottoman just like the one that I spent my kids’ infancy rocking them in for just $135. Use coupon code URTYJLI8 for another 10% off, too. Or check out those wireless speakers, if you don’t have a baby to rock. Heh.

Meanwhile, over at 6pm.com, today’s deals cover Reef, Steve Madden, Vaneli, Penny Loves Kenny, and more. I don’t know about you, but I may need a new pair of shoes to cheer myself up after that pitiful Friday Sale showing.

If you need another daily deal fix, did you know that Meijer has a Daily Steal? It changes every day at noon, and like the others of its ilk, it always ships for free. Right now it’s a portable elliptical thing, but check back midday for another option.

Well, I’ve got my coffee and I’ve ordered some whey. It’s not an awful start to the day, but I am still making very stern eyebrows in your direct, Amazon. Hmph.

Pearls before deals

If pearls are your thing, go quick and check out the current Amazon Lightning Deal—they’ve got a really pretty multi-color pearl necklace for just $23!

This one will sell out quickly, so hop to it. Especially you guys who bought your wives plates for Valentine’s Day. Seriously.

Oh, it’s that guy!

I think I’ve mentioned here before that my husband and I are currently working our way through the entire series of West Wing DVDs, which is extremely entertaining for me because I’ve never seen them before, and extremely entertaining for him to watch my reactions, particularly to the cast.

Our standard joke now is who can rush to exclaim, “Oh, it’s that guy!” whenever another familiar actor shows up. (It turns out that there were a lot of famous people on that show, you know?)

And that’s sort of how I feel every time I remember to go shop over at Sierra Trading Post; I often forget that it’s there, and then when I go look, I’m all, “Oh, right—they have those brands! And that stuff! And really good prices!” And I wonder how I ever forgot about them. (I’m sorry, STP. I still love you!) Now is a particularly good time to start looking at sandals, both because they have a vast array of expensive brands at ridiculously low prices, and because it’s a good time to remind oneself that winter cannot possibly last forever. You’re welcome.

Make it even better: Until March 3rd, 2010, use coupon code ALFEB2KX to save 15% off your $100+ order or 20% off your $150+ order. (All together, now: “Oh, it’s that discount!”)

Time to get your tunes on

If you just couldn’t swing a new MP3 player this holiday season, but saving your pennies (and maybe even getting a tax refund already, you early bird, you) has put you in a better place, I have good news: Right now Amazon is having a big iPod sale on 2008 models, where you can save up to 35% on a 4th gen Nano, 2nd gen iTouch, or accessories.

Maybe you want to hold out for a 2010 model, but personally I’d rather save the cash than have the supposed latest and greatest. Then again, I have a “regular” iPod from 2006, so I clearly have my own biases. And am not particularly proud.

Fancy or hippie, your choice

The daily deals at 6pm.com are making me laugh, today. I guess they’re trying that whole “something for everyone” approach; Donald J. Pliner for those who like the finer things in life, and Simple shoes for those who like their shoes made out of hemp. (Not that I’m making fun of Simple, you understand. They’re the most comfortable sneakers I own!)

I really don’t know where the Mephisto, Oakley, and Betsey Johnson stuff falls on the spectrum. Somewhere to the side of “smokin’ hot deal,” for sure.

Reminder: Idbids contest

Don’t forget—you have until just before midnight tonight to enter to win an eco-friendly Idbids Starter Kit for your favorite little eco-warrior.

But you can’t win if you don’t enter, so make sure you get your comment in before the deadline.

As always, please leave your entry on the actual contest post. The comments on this post are reserved for discussion of your favorite “hot, new trend.” I’ll go first: My daughter has recently informed me that she simply must have a pair of Converse sneakers. I don’t think she believed me when I told her that I’d had to have a pair at her age, as well. Heh.

It’s still soup season

Remember back when the Friday Sale used to actually have good deals? (I know, I know; hard to remember that far back!) One of the things they used to have fairly regularly was a big Calphalon stock pot for a good price.

Well, if you hurry, that 12-quart Calphalon stock pot is the current Lightning Deal at just $40 shipped.

And then you could make me some chili. It’s a little cold in here.
