Deals and your moral compass

Selena wrote in with such a great email that I can’t wait to hear the discussion on this one. She is extra pretty for coming up with such good questions!

Dear Pretty One,

I’ve been enjoying your site for about two years now and have learned so much about deal-finding. I love the thrill of a deal, and the idea of having nice things for less money makes me swoon. I’ve had several deal quandaries lately, though, and I’m hoping you can share your thoughts on them. I want to score deals with both your help and a clear conscience!

I’m totally up for this one, because I love a debate. read more…

More clearanced clearance

Tis the season, I guess, but that doesn’t stop me from giggling when I see emails declaring that the clearance is on clearance.

(They generally cause me to burst out in a rousing round of “She sells seashells by the sea shore, too, but that’s not really relevant, I guess.) (Rousing round! Really relevant! I can’t stop!)

Anyhoo, right now at Liz Claiborne, you get another 25% off items already on clearance, through January 22nd, 2008. (Price reflects discounts already taken.) Also, shipping’s free on orders of $125+.

So at least you can look good while you’re doing your tongue twisters.

Fancy fondue

Alert reader Dorothy (although not my local friend Dorothy, who is probably now scratching her head and wondering if she emailed me in her sleep) left a comment to point out that this fancy schmancy fondue set is currently marked down to $29.99 (68% off) at Amazon.

You could certainly find a lesser set cheaper, but if you are serious about your fondue, or need a wedding gift that makes you look like you spent a lot more than you actually did, check this one out. It’s pretty awesome-looking (and serves six, and comes with a glass lazy susan, and, oh, just go look, already).

Thanks, Dorothy! Although this may explain why I have a sudden craving for cheese at 6:30 in the morning….

Have your football with a side of popcorn

Have one of those Dale & Thomas Popcorn giftcards laying around, still? Their current special is the big Ultimate Football Popcorn Party Box—it contains 8 bags of their gourmet popcorn, a glass bowl (oooh… a bowl! signed by… football people!), and another $20 giftcard!

The package is priced at $42, which isn’t bad (particularly if you’re using a $20 card towards it), but let’s make it sweeter: use coupon code EX115D4T to bring the price down to $35. Coupon expires January 20th, 2008.

Get that burning tax question answered

Have one tax question you’re dying to have explained to you? For the month of January, TurboTax is letting everyone submit one tax question to be personally answered by a professional.

I’m sure they’ll be trying to sell you TurboTax, but if you have a complicated question but don’t want to employ a tax specialist or hang on hold with the IRS for six hours, you might want to check ’em out.

Mindful Money: Yours, mine, and ours

Hopefully you read my recent post on tucking money away into savings regularly, and now you’re doing just that, even if you weren’t before. There were some great comments on that last post, some of which impelled me to say what I want to say today:

I don’t care if you work or you stay home; I don’t care if your spouse is a jerk or up for canonization; if you are married, you still need to have at least one bank account and one credit card in your name only.

There are a number of reasons why this is true (we’ll get to those in a minute), but the first thing you need to do in this matter is remember that money is money and love is love and confusing those two things never leads to anything good. I swear. read more…

Another chance for cheap dining

In case you missed the last, oh, seventy trillion times this came around, it’s Restaurant.com coupon time again.

Through January 20th, 2008, take 50% off your dining certificate order with coupon code DINE. $25 of eating out for just $5, just because you’re pretty. And, um, have $5. And some advance planning.

But mostly because you’re pretty.

Buy a DVD player, get DVDs

I don’t know a lot about the new DVD technology, so I’m merely going on reviews and what I’ve read, but this Toshiba A3 high-def DVD player has great reviews and is currently $131.98 shipped at Amazon. That’s not a super price (though it’s certainly competitive), but the deal here is that purchase of a qualifying Toshiba player makes you eligible for this rebate which comes in the form of 5 DVDs. Assuming you’re interested in the DVDs offered, that makes it a pretty amazing deal.

(One of the eligible DVDs is Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Mmmmm, Johnny Depp….)

And what have you gotten lately?

It’s been a while since I asked folks to offer up the deals they scored recently. Whether it’s something you got through a tip here—in which case, yay, and also, feel free to compliment me—or something great you scored on your own, let’s bask in the glory of the almighty bargain together.

I have two goodies from last week to share (and not much else, because I have cut way back on my shopping this month): I used the coupon linked here to get a new house plant for $.40 from Lowe’s (here my husband interrupts to point out that technically, he bought the plant, and then I counter with the declaration that not only did I get a cheap plant, I didn’t even have to step foot in Lowe’s to do it!); and a quick trip to Target to check out the toy clearance yielded this hydrogen car kit for just $19 (and Santa doesn’t have to shop for my son next year).

You?
