Need a mop?

Gather round, kids. I want to tell you a story about when I was young—back in the Jurassic age. You know, we had it pretty hard, back then. Why, when we wanted to mop the floor, we had to take out a bunch of rope on a stick, and a bucket, and we had to put the clump of ropes in the bucket to get it wet, and then we had to rub it all over the floor, and then we had to ring out the ropes with our hands, and—

Hey! Where are you going? Come back!

Okay, okay… I’ll cut right to the chase. If you’re interested in a Bissell Flip Ease All-In-One Vacuum and Mop it’s just $21.24 shipped at Best Buy, today. The same model is forty bucks over at Amazon (check out the reviews there; mostly favorable).

It depends on the sort of cleaning you do, whether this could replace your regular mop or just be good for quick pick-ups, but think Swiffer on steroids.

Save big, today only

Many thanks to pretty reader Jamie for letting me know that today only (that’s December 17th, 2007), you can save 20% on your entire order at either Leaps and Bounds or One Step Ahead. Just use coupon code ONESAVBE at either site.

It applies to sale items as well, so while I know you may be all burned out on buying toys and such, this is a great chance to pick up a large item of baby gear (stroller, highchair, etc.) if you’re in the market for one.

They don’t have any actual babies for sale, though. I checked.

Today you’re on your own

But if you’re still on the hunt for the cheap toys, I’ll give you a hint.

Here’s where you can look at all of the Amazon-offered (therefore, free super saver shipping eligible, in most cases) toys which are 70% – 99% off.

You’re welcome.

And a few other things

(Just in case you’d like to do some bargain hunting someplace else, this weekend.)

So, remember how Restaurant.com got us all hot-n-bothered with that last deal, because it included a $20 certificate to Dale & Thomas? And then it seemed like it was over right away? Well, never fear—use coupon code HOLIDAY through December 20th to take 60% off your Restaurant.com order (that’s $25 of dining for just $4), plus you’ll get a $20 Dale & Thomas code, and D&T is offering free second day delivery right now if you buy 2 or more items. Hard to beat that kind of savings for an outlay of just $4.

Hark, it’s the return of the Overstock Weekender that doesn’t totally suck: Through December 17th, 2007, you can get free shipping and take $10 off your $150+ order through that there link. (There’s also some last minute holiday specials you might want to check out, though I’m not sure they can be combined with the other coupon.)

Need a gift for that hard-to-buy-for person? All weekend you can take advantage of free shipping upgrades at Harry and David on select items. This is a great way to say “thank you” or even just “I have no idea what to buy you but this stuff is super yummy.”

Over at Barnes & Noble, take 25% off one item in cart with coupon code N6R7C4J. The coupon is valid through December 18th, which is also the last day to order and still get guaranteed Christmas delivery with their Fast and Free Shipping.

Through December 16th, 2007, ship your whole Classic Closeouts order (any size!) for free; just enter coupon code HOLJOY.

But who am I kidding? You’re all still over at Amazon.

Alright Amazon, just STOP IT

I actually have stuff to do today, so my time combing through the deals is going to be sort of limited. Thank goodness. I feel sort of hungover. I think that’s just the cold I have, but it could be a result of overdosing on deals. (I feel so dirty.)

If you’re tired of toys, there’s a ton of kitchen and dining markdowns that are too numerous for me to list. If you have some time and some money to burn, you might want to go have a look.

Did you get your kid a Leapster last year (like every other parent on the planet)? If you’re willing to overlook the fact that Amazon seems to have forgotten how to sort by price (Amazon, I do not think that word means what you think it means), there are plenty of Leapster cartridges deeply discounted right now.

I spent the better part of two months and about $50 on a karaoke machine for my daughter, so of course this one is now 65% off. Hmph. (Word to the wise—this is not as fully-functioned as most karaoke players, but it does have “extra” features like judging, which would be really fun for a kid who’s a big American Idol fan.)

The Cranium Super Forts are a hot toy this year, and while the jungle fort is not quite as versatile as some of the others, at 65% off it’s hard to be too critical.

Need a Lite Brite for a big kid? People are buying Lite-Brite FX Flash Art as a retro decor item for grown-ups, looks like. I’m not sure why. But hey, it’s 75% off. (This Spiderman one is even cheaper, if you’d rather.)

These purse pals remind me of the old-time Polly Pockets, like the ones I had as a little kid (not today’s skanky ones). I think that since they’re animals, it’s harder to make them sleazy. Heh.

And winning the prize for Most Likely To Cause Your Small Child to Swoon When Found Under the Tree on Christmas Morning—Tek Nek Lightning Spring Horse. At 70% off. (Man. Is this where I tell you that when I was a kid, rocking horses weren’t soft and cushy, and they sure as heck didn’t have sound effects? Also, we had to walk uphill both ways in the snow to get to ours, you know.)

If my daughter were a bit younger, I would totally buy this bunny hop Madame Alexander doll and save it for her Easter basket. Sooooo cute. Sooooo 70% off.

Need a toddler gift? The cuteness, it hurts me: Moo Mower (70% off).

Keep in mind that you’re cutting it close for Christmas shipping, at this point, but you can always upgrade (or get a jump on your shopping for next year)….

Succumbing to the toy deals once again

Why yes, I am still going through the toy deals at Amazon. They keep changing, so it’s sort of like my version of gambling. Will it be $5? $70? $10.99? Who knows! It’s totally random!

My children are too big for it, but I have a soft spot in my heart for this Radio Flyer pedal car. That’s the sort of classic toy I always wanted to get for them, but was always too expensive. $56.99 shipped is the cheapest I’ve ever seen it.

Remote controlled insects, you say? 70% off, $15 apiece? Get this one or this one.

You’ve gotta love it when the under $5.99 section starts out with a deeply discounted human brain and human heart. (“Merry Christmas! Start dissecting!”) (Lots of goodies in there.)

I’d never seen these before, but they’re pretty cool: Squashblox!

How about a toy for you? The Magellan Maestro 3100 made the best of 2007 for GPS units, and it’s currently just $145 (59% off).

I think I may need some eggnog. I’ve had a very hard week, what with all these toy deals.

Disaster preparedness

Sure, if there’s a flood or a blizzard or whatever, you’ll have all those Amazon boxes to keep you warm (or to turn into boats!), but will you have a solar light, radio, weather band, battery charger, siren, cell phone charger and apple corer all in one?

If the apple coring part is negotiable, you might want to check out this deal on a Survivor 10-in-1 jobbie. Just $10 shipped for today, or absolutely free if you’re a new Google Checkout user.

These may not arrive in time for Christmas, but it’s a great item to have in your emergency kit. (Really, you’re not going to be making pie, post-apocalypse… let the apple corer go.)

Seriously?

True to form, there is, indeed, a Friday Sale over at Amazon today.

Point of note: They’ve just removed the “Toys and Baby” section, perhaps in light of their difficult week of giving away toys to everyone. Heh.

Perhaps there’s something good in there for the rest of us…? Let’s find out!

Not exactly cheap, but 41% off (and the lowest price I’ve ever seen): this Sony DCR-SR200 camcorder gets excellent reviews.

I think I love this Anne Klein pea coat. Maybe because it has a hood (which is unusual), or maybe because it’s 64% off. It’s a toss-up. (Want something a bit longer? This swingy walker coat is 68% off!)

Want a smarter dog? Apparently you should train ’em up with an Iqube. I had no idea. (For further doggie indignity, don’t forget the Santa suit.)

Here’s something I forgot to mention during yesterday’s post about what to buy for men; most guys I know get entirely too excited by a fancy weather station. (Slightly less fancy, and not part of the Friday sale, but how about a self-setting projection clock?) (Also not in the Friday Sale, but a possible “guy gift” at a great price—how about all three seasons of Arrested Development for $29.99?)

It’s comforting to know that if my son never learns to ride his bike, eventually we can just get him one of these.

I have no idea why this topiary is 83% off. I mean, who wouldn’t want some fake foliage planted in a shoe? Excuse me, Santa’s boot. That makes it all okay.

Here’s a great price on a serious coffeemaker, great for a small office or a big caffeine addict.

This bamboo cutting board would be a great filler item if you’re looking to get your order up to $25 for free shipping; it’s pretty, and who doesn’t need a cutting board?

I’m hoping the toy deals will slow down today, but we’ll see. (I need some rest!)

. . . and pages of Amazon to comb before I sleep. . .

This sale has to end soon, for the sake of my schedule. Not to mention my marriage. Lord.

Anyway! Would you like some more toy deals? Of course you would. Please, allow me. It would be my pleasure.

This is a really cool gear set (70% off) for ages 7-11. If you have younger kids, the goofy grins (70% off) and boogie buddy (67% off) sets are for ages 5+.

These are not wood. No, really, they’re Knotwud! (Awesome foam block set, 70% off.)

This Melissa and Dough Dragon is only 60% off (isn’t it great when I don’t consider that a really good deal?), but it’s just so cool. (29″ long, too—it’s huge.)

How about some educational games? Check out dino math tracks (ages 6-9) or spill your guts (ages 7-10), both 70% off.

There’s plenty of Tamagotchi V4s marked down to $4.50; these are actually quite fun, and my kids have ones that cost a lot more, back from when they were new technology.

You know I am not a fan of Barbie, but… but… well, just look at these Fairyoke Wings! That’s really sort of cute. (And 70% off.)

I have a feeling the Friday Sale is going to be a letdown, after all of this….

What to buy for your man

Call me sexist if you must, but I think that quite often, men are really difficult to buy presents for. Women tend to be pickier, but the men I know are much quicker to spend money on themselves, leaving the rest of us stumped when a birthday or holiday rolls around.

Heidi knows all about this; she writes:

I’ve been married for 13 years, love my husband, but NEVER know what to buy him. If he wants something he buys it. I usually do the stand by gift like a shirt or slippers. Any suggestions?

It’s the “if he wants something he buys it” bit that gets many of us. There are only two ways around it: Either you have to buy something he wanted but didn’t think was affordable (and that means finding a killer deal), or you have to buy something he didn’t know he wanted. read more…
