Mobile Skype

I know you’ve heard me go on and on about using Skype for long distance calls, before, so I won’t go into that, again. But did you know that you can now use Skype on your mobile phone? There’s a pretty slick iPhone app, but it works on other phones as well.

Depending on your cellular plan, this may give you a cheaper option for international calls. And depending on your phone, I think it may work for regular calls without tapping into your cell minutes (I’m still figuring it out, but for instance on the iPhone it’s a separate app, and could be a minutes-saver).

Might be worth checking out.

Wii Fit just got skitastic

(What do you mean, “skitastic” isn’t a word? Of course it is. It’s right here in my dictionary. Of awesomeness.)

Don’t have a Wii Fit yet? Maybe this is the deal for you: Right now at eToys, you can buy a Wii Fit and automatically get Wii Ski for free, with free shipping, too.

If you don’t have a Wii console yet, well, there’s a deal for that, too—right now you can buy a Wii Console and pick a game for free, with free shipping on those as well. (If you go for that deal, get Mario Kart. It’s not only one of the more expensive games, it’s crazy fun.)

Funny how there’s all these deals on Wii stuff, now that it’s summer. I guess Nintendo’s afraid people are going to go outside, or something.

That’s a mighty big thumb

I remember buying myself a 16MB thumb drive, long ago. 16 entire megabytes! More space than I could ever possibly need! And I think I paid about $50 for it, on clearance, and I was plenty proud of myself for snagging such a great deal.

Go ahead and laugh. I know I am.

Fast forward to today: Now you can pick up a 16GB 2.0 thumb drive from Buy.com for $24.99 shipped. That’s 16 gigabytes—I’ll admit to being not very good at math, but that’s 1,000 times the storage of my old thumb drive, right? For half the price?

You young whippersnappers today have no idea how hard we had it back in the old days. Did I mention I had to walk uphill for miles in the snow without shoes for that old drive…?

You’ll flip for this one

Ooooh, looks like the 30 minute Flip Ultra Camcorder is down to $49.99 shipped at Amazon, today (thanks, Megumi!)—that’s crazy low for a non-refurbished unit!

Has Dad been wanting one of these for Father’s Day? Have you been saving your pennies for one so that you can capture those awesome summer moments? (Yes, my kid cannonballing off the board into the pool and then hauling himself out, oblivious to his sagging swim trunks, is what passes for an awesome moment ’round here….)

I carry my Flip around in my purse, and I never thought I’d tote a camcorder. It’s tiny. And I never miss the good stuff, anymore.

So much prom night blackmail material, so little time….

Out with the old, in with the (cheaper) new

Every time I mention a deal on video games or consoles at Amazon, someone always pipes up to remind me that places like GameStop habitually let you trade in old games towards new ones, and that that’s a lot more cost-effective.

And it is, if you don’t mind going to the mall to your local participating store. (Me, I’d rather stay at home where there aren’t yet teenagers glaring at me.)

But now Amazon’s taking their cue from the mall stores, because for the next couple of weeks, when you trade in $50 or $75 worth of games, you get Amazon credit and you get money off a new console. That’s right—you’re basically getting double the credit. Trade in $50 worth of games? Get $50 worth of Amazon credit and a $50 credit towards the game console of your choice. Trade in $75 worth of games? Get $75 worth of Amazon credit and a $50 credit towards the game console of your choice.

Assuming you’re toying with moving from one system to another, now may be the time to get on it.

GPS for the slightly-less-fancy

Anyone who knows me knows that I can get lost on my way to my own house. It’s a special gift. The gift of directional stupidity!

Thank goodness for my GPS unit. It has saved me more than once.

And yeah, someday maybe I’ll upgrade to one with Text-To-Speech (that means it says the street names out loud, too, not just “turn right”), but if you want GPS on the cheap, regular turn-by-turn directions are still pretty good, and a lot less expensive.

Today Amazon is offering a refurbished TomTom ONE 130 for just $69.99 shipped. That’s already a pretty good deal on a unit with good reviews, but there’s also an available $20 mail-in rebate, meaning it ends up being yours for under $50.

It’s hard to put a price on not getting lost, but at that price, even those of you who aren’t perpetual wanderers can probably afford a GPS.

Crazy 8 crazy prices (again)

Surely your children didn’t outgrow their clothes again while you were looking the other way, right? That never happens!

Well, there’s another big sale on at Crazy 8, just on the off chance that one of your kids came downstairs in a belly shirt this morning that fit just fine last week. Ahem.

Use coupon code C8SUMMER for $10 off your $30 order, and shipping is always a flat $5.

(I do love me some Crazy 8 for the kids.)

New month, new grocery specials

Yep, it’s still June. I checked. May just isn’t coming back. Alas!

But a new month means new grocery deals at Amazon, and if you forgot to stock up last time (or if you’ve already run out), check it out: Right now you can get eligible Stretch Island and FruitaBu snacks for up to 40% off! These are great summer snacks for the kids who aren’t currently wearing their college funds on their teeth (“Sorry, kid, it was straight teeth or college…”) and who want the sweet stuff. (Yes, these are full of sugar. Natural fruit sugars, though, as opposed to refined sugars.)

Use coupon code STRCHBER for 25% off, then buy via Subscribe & Save for another 15% off. Some of the choices are already on sale, too. This 30-pack of raspberry leathers comes out to just under 30 cents a serving with the discounts. Not bad.

Time to get your certificates

Hey, I don’t know if you noticed, but it’s not actually May anymore. It’s June, even though I’m pretty sure May only lasted about a week this year. Someone should write someone a stern letter about that.

Anyway, now’s the time to hop over to Restaurant.com and buy those certificates to the restaurants that release a limited monthly quota. Because, yes, later this month there will be 60%, 70%, and maybe even 80% off codes… but that won’t help if your favorite restaurant sold out for the month on the 3rd.

If you’re buying now, use coupon code ENTREE to save 50% on your certificate order; that’ll get you $25 worth of dining for just $5 our of pocket, and a great excuse to set up a Date Night.
