Look Ma, no streaks!

Thanks to Mary for pointing me towards this free sample of Degree Women Ultra Clear. It’s “100% little black dress approved!” It’s 100% free (while supplies last)!

I love health and beauty samples, because there is nothing sadder than buying a new product and discovering that you hate it. It’s so wasteful to throw it away, but no one wants your used deodorant, dude. This way, you try it out, and if it sucks, who cares. Or if you have no interest in it at all? When it comes, donate it to your local shelter (along with those free soaps and such you’ve been collecting at hotels).

You’re going to hate me for this one

I’m just going to apologize right up front. I know. I know. You will curse my name the day you taste this stuff. I’m sorry.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of Dale and Thomas Popcorns, now is the time to check them out. Their stuff is very yummy. (And that’s an endorsement from me, a regular person who appreciates good snacks. Sure, they’re endorsed by Oprah, but do you want food recommendations from Oprah? Just sayin’.) I ordered a sample the last time this deal was offered and I still haven’t gotten over it. Rather, my tastebuds are still longing for more… while my behind is wishing for less. If you see what I mean.

So. You have until July 14th to get a 5-cup bag of premium gourmet popcorn for just $2.95 shipping/handling. If you have willpower (I don’t), it would make a lovely gift rather than a gluttonous late-night snack.

But if you eat it, and promise not to yell at me? I promise not to tell.

[Note: The site seems to be having intermittent issues. If it’s not working, try back in a bit.]

Now how do I fill it?

Mir, you are so smart, thrifty and pretty. However, your recent posts about freezers still leave me with some questions.

I love the IDEA of the freezer and the convenience, savings, time and health benefits it promises. I have a medium sized upright.

My problem seems to be with actual usage. I still lose things to freezer burn because I obviously don’t know how to properly package things for storage. What is the best way to package freezer items for storage? Do you use ziplocs, a vacuum sealer machine, tupperware or corningware? How do you get the best space usage from your chosen packaging?

I’m also having trouble getting started. I never seem to find the time to cook extra and feed the freezer just to establish a beginning inventory. I think if I got started I could handle replenishing. Around here, every night is a busy one. And, frankly, I hate to cook. I’ve also never quite got the hang of think-ahead meal planning.

More freezer info please!

Well, seeing as how I’m so smart, thrifty and pretty, how can I resist trying to help Charlotte out? Flattery will get you everywhere, ’round here. read more…

Teachers and homeschoolers: Stock up!

Didax Educational Resources is offering free shipping on any order with code N6B3W2, now through August 4th. Be sure to check out their Bargain Basement to sweeten the deal! (Not all of their reduced items show up in that category, though, so be sure to look around.)

Me, I prefer that my kids play with rocks and pinecones and empty shoeboxes, but if you’re into that whole education thing, you might find something good. (I’m kidding. Don’t call DCFS. I swear, the kids are reading wholesome books right this very second.)

Super-straight hair

I spent many, many years straightening my naturally curly hair. Now, I am old and lazy and do not care. (Oh, also I am a poet!) Anyway, I do remember the relentless pursuit of a straight, glossy mane.

I hear that the Way To Go these days is the Chi flat iron. So I was thrilled when I received a tip from Karen (the intrepid designer of this site) about this 1″ Chi on sale with free shipping at Folica.

Ever your intrepid bargain-hunter, I decided to poke around a bit, and discovered that this iron is the same price at Amazon. But if you buy it from Folica, you also get the heatproof pouch/mat for free (a $20 value), so I’d recommend picking it up from them if you want in on the deal.

And you know, I get a kickback when you shop Amazon through the site, and I get nothing from Folica. This is love for my readers, right here, with me recommending you shop Folica. Do you see how I sacrifice for you?

A must-read

Courtesy of my friend Kym—a financial maven in her own right—here’s an article you simply must read:

Seduced by sales? You may need retail therapy

Read it. Then read it again. I’m as big of a bargainaholic as they come, but you can’t lose sight of the end goal (which is hopefully to have enough money to live a comfortable life). Have you ever bought something you didn’t need just because it was a great deal? Go read this article.

Does size matter?

Probably not realizing that I would go straight for the lowbrow joke, Laura writes:

I love your site! I’m hoping you can help me figure out a small house-hold quandry.

Right now, I buy just about the cheapest paper towels available, in large-ish quantities, so as to save money. We go through a roll about every week and a half, but I know that we’ll be using a lot more once I have my baby.

I’m wondering if maybe buying the more expensive brand with “Select-a-size” gimmickry might actually save money in the long run. As it is now, I use at least one whole cheapo paper towel for any job, but it’s pretty rare that I actually need that much towel. Given the higher quality and increased absorbency of say, the Bounty paper towels, maybe it would be worth it.

What do you think?

As always, there are a few questions in here, which we’ll look at individually. read more…

My neglected Canadians!

I love you people, what with your bagged milk and your funny accents. I do. And I am duly ashamed that so many of the deals I post here are only good within the United States. Our neighbors to the north, you too deserve the bargains.

Thanks to my buddy Sue, I have excellent news to share! Grand River Toys (“Proudly Canadian!”) is currently offering free Canadian shipping through July 31st. Want it shipped within Canada? Absolutely free, regardless of order size. I can’t find it stated anywhere on the site, but Sue swears that it’s true. She wouldn’t lie to me.

Check them out; they have some very cool educational toys.

Oh, no. Just NO.

Three words that should never, ever be strung together. EVER:

Disposable, Fashionable Swimwear.

From the site:

You have to tie it onto your body. If you are (for example) a size 4, you have to tie it tighter than if you are a size 10. Lighter colors may be more revealing than the Black, depending upon your body tone. This is a suit made from an unfinished, miracle fiber stretch fabric which has been laser cut. It has not been hand stitched. These are unlined, disposable suits and the lavender, pool and mango colors might be not suit those who are more modest, have poor body tone or excessive body hair; if any of these is an issue, please choose the Black color.

I developed a nervous tic, reading that. Lord have mercy.

To can or not to can

Tanya has some hard questions for me this morning. So I know you’re all just as pleased as I was that she remembered to tell me that I’m pretty.

Good afternoon!
In the tradition laid before me, allow me to first state that you and
your site are beautiful, delightful and worth of admiration!

I have a question…. I grew up in a farming family, where we did a
lot of home preserving/canning. Now that I am an adult with a family
of my own, I am finding it very challenging to find the time to do the
same during the summer (I work outside the home and already have a 12 hour day before walking in the door).

To be frank, it offends me to purchase canned tomatoes when I’m
capable of canning them myself, but when you can get canned tomatoes on sale for 69 cents a can, it’s hard to justify the expenditure of time and energy (not just my own, but that of my stove, air conditioner, sanity, etc.).

Is there a thumb rule for what kinds of canning is best done in house
and what is best purchased at the grocery store? I hate the taste of store-bought stuff, but the convenience is undeniably attractive, and I am no longer certain how much monetary savings are really arising from the home-canning method.

I am also finding that even with produce in season, it is more
expensive in the city than I would like, and almost everything from a
grocery store tastes like cardboard anyway. Is there any alternative
to the grocery store or roadside stand methods of procuring my
veggies? The former is always available, but tastes like cardboard.
The latter tastes much better, but is rarely available and often
expensive. Is there an alternative of which I am unaware?

Thank you for your time!

Phew! Lots of issues in there. Let’s see what we can do. read more…
