Luke, I am your Pop(-Up)

My son has just entered the Star Wars Infatuation Phase. (Please hold me.)

You know I’m a fool for Sabuda and Reinhart pop-up books, right? Because I’ve only recommended various ones here about a thousand times? So honestly, what am I supposed to do now that I’ve discovered they make a Star Wars: Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy book, especially when I see that it’s nearly half-off?

My hand is hovering over the purchase button….

Now I need a cuddle

When I was a kid, Gund’s ad campaign was “Gotta Getta Gund.” Anyone else remember that? Even well into my teenage years, those soft, fluffy Gund stuffed animals were still considered a status symbol in your room. As a teen, you had them for “display,” of course, but the reality was that we all still slept with stuffed animals and hoped that no one knew.

Boscov’s has an exclusive Gund this year: The 18″ Ginger The Bear, and she’s (he’s?) so cute I can practically feel that downy Gund-fur through the monitor.

Even better, it’s normally $29.99 and is now marked down to just $5.97! Shipping is free on orders of $50+, and there’s still time for delivery before Christmas. Just in case there’s a teddy-bear-shaped hole in someone’s heart….

I’ve had TVs smaller than this

Back in my day, young whippersnappers, computers had twelve-inch screens and we liked it that way. It came with a screen and that was that—you could squint at it all you wanted, but it’s not like you could just go buy another one.

You certainly couldn’t go getting a 22″ LCD monitor for $139.99. Sure, it’s refurbished, and yeah, you need to pay with Paypal to get that extra $10 off (otherwise it’s $149.99), but still. You kids today are spoiled rotten.

Now get off of my lawn, darn it.

I do love a multi-purpose gift

So, I’ve been watching this Moon Sand Treasure Kingdom set at Amazon, because it’s normally $30 and it’s currently down to just $7.99. That’s a pretty fabulous price, obviously, but I’ve read a lot of complaints about how messy it is, and how it sticks in carpets and stuff.

(I find it amusing that people are surprised that sand sticky enough to build with might be messy. Go figure!)

But then, two things happened. First, a friend of mine told me that she loves this stuff, not the least of which because she only lets her kids play with it out on the porch. You want to play with the Moon Sand? Sure! Get out of my house!

And second, it occurred to me that this may be the finest passive-aggressive “here’s something for your kid that’s going to make you insane” gift in the history of gift-giving. That perfect parent at school, who never has a hair out of place? Her kid would love this set at his next birthday party. Trust me!

Leapster deal

Catch it if you can—the current Lightning Deal at Amazon is the Leapster2 for $39.99. Get your order up to $60+ of Leapster stuff (buy a game) and you’ll get another $20 off, automatically!

Don’t blink or you’ll miss it

Today (December 17th, 2008) only, everyone can take 12% off any purchase at Smartbargains through that link there. They have tons of holiday stuff on clearance, already, and plenty of everything else at crazy prices.

I got a sweater dress there a while back that has the advantage of, you know, looking like a lovely dress, while basically feeling like a pair of pajamas. I’m not trying to sway you, or anything, but I’m pretty sure the stuff they sell there is magic.

A few quickie toy deals

Yes, the trademarked Amazon “drunken lemur” pricing practice is alive and well, and if you spend your time checking prices you’ll soon need a stiff drink. I can’t keep up with things going up and down and up and down in price, but when I see something hitting a good price, I do try to come post it before it goes up again.

A few things I noticed just now:

IlluStory Make Your Own Story Kit is down to $14.99 (32% off). This is hardly bargain-basement but this is a fabulous gift and hardly ever gets discounted. What kid doesn’t want to make their own book??

Fisher-Price Puppy Grows and Knows Your Name is down to $17.99 (70% off). I think having this toy in my house would give me nightmares, but hey, to each their own. (Their own freaky animatronic fluffball, even.)

Jakks Pacific Ultimotion Swing Zone Sports Motion Controller Video Game is down to $22.99 (69% off). This is basically a Wii Sports knock-off; it’s completely self-contained and requires only a television. This would be a great gift if you’re sponsoring a needy family, for example, where there’s a kid who really wants (but is likely not going to get) a Wii.

Now let’s all check back in five minutes to see how many of those prices have changed….

Flip over at Woot

Several of you have emailed me to point out that today’s Woot! deal is a Flip camcorder for $59.99. That’s a great deal, though make sure you understand what you’re getting: It’s a refurbished 30-minute Flip Ultra. Again, for the money, you can’t beat it. But do bear in mind that it’s not new, it’s not the 60-minute capacity, and it’s a generation behind the current model.

Still, it’s the one to buy if it’s for a younger person, and/or if cost is the main concern.

If you want to go whole hog, you’ll still want to check out Amazon’s bundle deal on the Flip MinoHD—it’s the latest version of the Flip (with 60-minute capacity, small/sleek design, HD-capability) and you can pick two accessories for free.

We have a 30-minute Flip Ultra and use it all the time. As soon as that money tree I planted in the back yard starts to grow, though, I’m getting the Mino. Heh.

Gold Box and other deals

Goooooood morning! Don’t forget to check the Amazon Gold Box deals today—the daily deal is a great price ($89.99; half off) on a TomTom One GPS.

Right now the lightning deal is a fabulous little full-spectrum blue light for use in Seasonal Affective Disorder treatment. I have the earlier generation of the light listed, and I have to tell you that it changed my life. Or maybe I should say it changed my family’s life, as I’m a lot less crabby when I treat my SAD rather than just snarling at everyone. This device is tiny (portable) and powerful, and if you or someone you love has SAD, $139.95 is a great price on what will make life infinitely more livable.

And then, today’s Amazon video game deals are some Playstation 3 and XBox things I don’t understand, that look like they involve a lot of shooting. So. Um. If you need some of those….

(Sorry, I have trouble raving about a SAD light and shoot-’em-up games in the same post. Maybe if I sat in front of my light for longer…?)
